I have a stricture

So, I had an endoscopy today. Dr. Holover is so sweet. I've haven't puked in 2 days, so I REALLY debated canceling or going.

I have a small stricture. He got the scope in, which supposedly stretched it a little, and he wants me to come back next week or the week after for another endoscopy so he can dilate the stricture.

We'll see how I feel by Monday & then decide if it will be the 19th or 26th.

I was SO relieved to find out I wasn't crazy! (at least about this.) I hope it this doesn't mean I'm gonna keep having problems, but you guys & the docs. told me it's pretty common.

Oh, and by the way, my dog (9-year-old Westie) now has diabetes--2 urine tests & 2 SHOTS a day for the rest of her life, which I hope is long. I learned how to give the shot this a.m. Thank G-d they're only under the skin & not into muscle!

Hi Karen.      So sorry to hear you had some complications, but am glad you found out what was wrong.  How long were you having trouble for?  If you can have the endoscopy on the 19, the sooner the better for you.                 Take care                       Tracy

Tracy, I really only vomited twice, but it was on water after a protein drink and the second time after a viactive, so I called Dr. Garber's office right away because I've never vomited or even felt nausous since the surgery. He pretty much guessed a stricture right away. Thank you ladies; it's good to know we care about each other.

Wow, what a relief for you to know what it is and to know that your doc can treat it confidently. I hope it heals quickly for you!

Hi Karen, The good thing is that stricture tends to get fixed with the endoscopy fairly easily.  The doctors just want to make sure that they don't stretch the opening that much which would negate the purpose of the WLS. I had two endoscopies for my stricture and that did the trick, in some cases, it takes more or they recur, but chances are all should be well. Have you had any recurring nausea and vomitting since the scope? Hope all is well and good luck with your doggie. Take care, Sue

You have to stay in shape. My grandmother, she started walking five miles a day when she was 60. She's 97 today and we don't know where the hell she is. - Ellen DeGeneres

Karen, hello, sorry to hear about the complication, yes strictures are common and sometimes ned several dilations to correct is all, one lady in my local support group did well with one but others seem to need 3-4 one woman 6, they say the stretching isn't a painful thing the scope is just a nuisance and taking the time off and all. From: ''Obesity Surgery'' Louis F. Martin  ISBN 0-07-140640-9 ©2004 pp: 309. Optimal Stomal size should be between 12-15mm (.5-.6 INCHES). ANYTHING SMALLER THAN 10MM (.4 inches) usually causes problems, a stomal opening of 6mm restricts one to fluids usually and less than 4mm restricts even fluids from passing. I have a diabetic cat and Tommy needs insulin 2x day, hes so good, I know dogs are more challenging to regulate sometimes according to my vet and when out of control the ravages of diabetes are swifter than cats who are more resiliant to blood sugar fluctuations, yes the shots are real easy although I am a nurse my huby and mother can both do them (mom when we go on vacation) and hubby in eve . I wish you and your pet well, so glad you are deciding to manage the diabetes.....

Nah you arent crazy....
