Protein

I have a question about the protein shakes.  As a pre-op I've been drinking Slim-Fast High Protein Chocolate shakes every morning for breakfast.  I buy the powder and make my own in the blender with lots of ice so it's a slushy.  I LOVE it.  and it keeps me completely full until lunchtime.   After surgery, will it be safe to drink something like that or will I have to give it up because it contains sugar?  I've been shopping around and it seems that ALL protein shakes have SOME sugar in them.   I realize that the 100% whey protein and soy proteins are sugar free, but they have not flavor and have to be mixed with something that does....are they the only option after surgery?   Also, can someone share info about Isopure?  What kinds you've tried, are they good, etc?   Surgery is only four weeks away and I feel like I need to prepare for the aftermath.  I'm so concerned about getting in the protein!   Thanks for your help.

I use the fruit flavored proteins.  There are a couple of different manufactures.  I  like the fuzzy navel, the watermelon and the tropical punch.  I mix them with water or sometimes crystal lite drinks.  They are so yummy.    You will have to probably stay away from the kind you are drinking now.  THey have way to many calories and sugar for the little bit of protein you get.   The whey proteins will give you on avaerage about 30 gm per 6-8 oz drink.    Take some time and go to the Vitalady.com website.  You can order all different kinds of protein samples for $1.99 each.   That way you can try them and find out what you like and what you dont' like.  And it is so reassuring to know that whatever she sells on her site is safe for us after surgery.  Her and her husband are living proof.  They have both had surgery and are years out and healthy.   Good luck you  Sally

Thank you!  I went over to Vitalady and ordered a whole bunch of samples.  I'll look for the Slim-Fast next time I'm shopping.  Thanks again!

Hello hun, what I found that helped with the flavor of some protein drinks is the s/f Devinci syrups. They come in all kinds of flavors and taste awesome. I have about 6 in my house right now.  Also the sugar in the slim-fast might not be the best at the start but once out a while you can see how it goes for you. I heard about the s/f Carnation instant breakfast shakes but I have not tried them as of yet. Just  know that what you like now might change after surgery, very strange but our likes change after the surgery. I also like the Champion protein powder with the added syrups...yummmm though I do not drink them now since I can eat my protein at this point. Sometimes I use them if I am just not in the eating mode though that is far and few between at this point. Keep us posted~

Hey chris - Colleen says that we can have slim fast post op but that it has to be the low carb only!!  The high protein and the others are too high in sugar.  Just to let you know.

A girls gotta find some fun somewhere.

Hi Chris! I often drink my breakfast on the fly and LOVE the no-sugar-added Carnation chocolate Breakfast drink with a scoop of soy protein powder stirred in. When I whiz it up in the blender with crushed ice, it tastes like a chocolate malt! Very low sugar and pumped with protein.
