Hi all,

What are ones options for pain meds for arthritis after WLS? I pretty much take 1 Aleve every other day for my knee. Someone told me that I will no longer be able to take those after WLS. Is this true?

Make sure you check with the surgeon about what your options are for arthritis pain.  I know any type of nsaid (aleve, ibuporfen, asprin, motrin) are out of the question after surgery.  I know tylenol is safe for us.  Maybe there is a prescription they can give you that is safe.

Good luck

Debi, Keep in mind that with the weight loss, you might have less knee pain.  But that will come later. I have back problems and my PCP gave me an Rx for Tramadol which I think is relatively new.  He had initially told me to take Motrin, but I have explained to him that I can't take any of those because they are hard on the stomach.  He said tramadol was not bad on the stomach and I think has some acetiminophen in them (which is what Tylenol is). Good luck! Sue

You have to stay in shape. My grandmother, she started walking five miles a day when she was 60. She's 97 today and we don't know where the hell she is. - Ellen DeGeneres

Hi Debi, Talk to your Surgeon PRE-OP! I get really severe menstrual cramps, and told my surgeon pre-op that there is NO way I can go without Motrin at "that time of the month". They agreed but have kept me on Nexium daily as a precaution, and limited me to 400 mg at a pop (I used to take 600 mg). Instead of the additional 200 mg, I take 2 tylenol with the Advil. Works fairly well and I am 10 months out without (knock wood!!!) any gastro problems from it. BUT.....you MUST get clearance from your surgeon. Mine was pretty confident that the above "recipe" would work safely, and it has! Best of luck, Karen

Debi, Yes we are limited to Tylenol after surgery for pain, which for me does not do much, so I would check with your surgeon and ask that same question. They might be able to prescribe something that is mild yet effective for the pain. Keep us posted hun!
