Hello, I am from the Maryland originally from Queens NY.  I have a friend that lives in Long Island and he has been thinking about having weight loss surgery. He is a bit apprehensive and I wanted to help him on his journey. He is my bestfriend's husband and ever since I had my surgery he has been very interested but he gets really scared and has not even tried to find a surgeon because he is afraid of dying on the table.  Does anyone know of any dr's in the tri state area that you would recommend? I would be greatful to any names of excellent doctors.   Thank you in advance for your help!

First, to answer your question. I suggest Dr. Garber in New Hyde Park. This is my surgeon. He is in Nassau County. I have many friends who have has this and they all used different doctors. Where does he live? As for fear, some times people do not understand and they tell you not to do this, but the truth is they do not know. They are just not informed. In fact a month ago, I was still "against" this entire thing. Then one day God opened my eyes. I wish you and your friend all the best. 3 0ther doctors I have hear about: 1) Dr. Gadaleta in Great Neck 2) Dr. Vohra, in Hewlett, 2 co-workers of mine have used him. One for the       lap band and one for the bypass. 3) Dr. Adaniel (?) I think in West Islip. I have a friend who used him.

I lived in East Meadow for 30 years. My family is still there. In fact I stopped by there last night on my way home from my appointment and it is not that far. I can not stress enough how AGAINST this I was. It was as if I was drowning. I kept kicking and resisting... and then just 2 weeks ago, In secret I was doing some internet searches and talked to a few people. Then I had started thinking about it over Memorial Day weekend (thanks to Big Medicine on TLC) and something clicked on our drive to and from our vacation that week.  So here I am 2 weeks later and I have met a wonderful and talented surgeon. I have the support of my husband and I have scheduled all of my appointments today. A lot can happen in just 2 weeks. Keep the Faith. Lauren

Can't help with LI docs... but I'd recommend my group (in NYC) any day for any of the 3 main WLS procedures... Dr Roslin, Dr Shah (my surgeon) and Dr Kurian (who I believe is moving to a different practice, though I don't know when).  They're affiliated with Lenox Hill Hospital in 77th st in NYC... GREAT docs (ALL of them) and great hospital/nursing staff. mainly what I wanted to say.... something you might want to pass along to your friend... you said he's afraid of dying on the table.  Here's a paragraph out of my OH blog from a couple days before my surgery: and here I am... 2 days away from a major life changing experience.  Scared? no.... excited? yes... nervous?  a little. morbid (or strange) as this may seem, I'm not one of those who are afraid of not waking up from surgery.  In reality, that's the LAST thing a PATIENT should be afraid of.  Think about it... you're in surgery... you're knocked out from the anesthesia.  If you kick it, you'll never know. I AM a little apprehensive of waking up.... THAT'S when you start feeling the pain. Also mention to him something most of us post-ops realize only after being a little bit out and back into the swing of things and able to carry on with our lives better, with less pain and more energy than ever before.... before the surgery, we didn't live, we existed.... now that the burden of 100 pounds or more has been lifted, now we can truly LIVE best of luck to you and your friend.
