Hi everyone,   I have a post op question I want to ask.  How do you take your crushed medication?  I tried it in applesauce this morning and threw up from the taste.  I was taking it in pudding but that is getting nasty too.  I can't tolerate the bitterness and aftertaste.  Anyone have any suggestions????

Jennifer, I was boring when I came home from surgery- I mixed my crushed meds in with water. The taste was not the best but  it did stay down. The one time I mixed the meds with applesauce I got sick so I stuck with the water. Hope that helps. Tara

Hi Jennifer, I am on MANY meds, and for me the Medice issue was by far the worst post-op. Believe it or not, I was taking crushed pills and I said, "What did I do this for?...My life is ruined!!" SO...I called my surgeon and he said that I could take anything M&M size or smaller whole, and to cut in half anything larger! Capsules: He said those may get stuck so I tried and it didn't. Tablets: I took whole, as long as they were the correct size I'll add that this was at about 5 days Post-op! I was thrilled...and have been doing so ever since. I hope that helps. Hugs, Karen

Thanks for asking this question Jennifer.  I was just thinking the same thing.  While I do hope to be dropping my meds for bp and cholesterol, my heart medication is a must and I was curious about taking it.

Hi Jennifer. Believe it or not ,that was the worst part of my post op surgery. I absolutely dreaded med time. I spoke with the doctor after about of month of misery and he agreed that I could break them in half and take smaller pieces at a time with water. What a relief that was for me. Different rules from different Docs.  Don't do anything yet until you speak to your Doctor. Believe me - I remember those ''apple sauce /med days vividly! Take Care~~ Diane

Jennifer, Hello!  I could not take the tastse of crushed pills - I couldn't keep it down if you paid me  ... I cut 'em 1/2 or swallowed 'em whole as long as the size was "M & M" or smaller like Karen mentioned!!!! Call your surgeon ... tell him you are having an issue with it and see if what he says! hugs, Britt

I could not stand the taste of the liquid vitamins so by the end of the first week, I was taking my regular pills.  They disolve so getting stuck is not an issue... My doctor & nutritionist both said as long as I can handle it just take the regular ones... the only chewable ones I used was the calcium until the bottle was gone and then I started on the pill form after that.  At week 3 I was put on Potassium for an issue I was having and even though they are horse pills, they disolve VERY quickly so even those are not an issue for me...  I actually took the Loritab in pill form in the hospital becasue the liquid was nasty tasting...  So.. My two cents is... Just try swallowing them!  (but not all at once!) Lori

Jennifer, OMG that was so nasty but I had to do it, swollowing for me right after surgery was not good so i would take them and mix it will 1/2 to 1 oz of crystal light at stronger strength so it was really sweet to help the aftertaste, I would just hold my breath and get through it! I mean I still had the after taste of the crystal light that was SOOO sweet tasting but it was better then the pill taste.

Jennifer,

I've done the crush stuff before & hated every minute of it. I went into Dr. Garber w/all meds last week & he said I'll be able to take them all, w/only one being cut in half. I also switched from Effexor 75mg capsules XR to 3 tiny 25mg pills a day. I told Dr. Garber that I absolutely, positively refuse to crush another pill--he cracked up & said that if my pharmacy stocks lortab liquid, I'm welcome to it. I already asked them to order it!

Other than liquid, the crystal light sounds pretty good. Hope it gets better for you.

I haven't had any issues swallowing pills. My mom use to give my brothers a banana when they were little with any pills they had to take, for some reason it helped them swallow the pills.
