Roux-en Y or Lap band
i have had my band for 2 years and i am very happy with it. i have lost 105 pounds and still have about 50 more to go. i wont say it has been easy, i've worked to get to where i am. dr. ren is a fine surgeon and her office staff is fantastic. she did my surgery. i see gaspar, her head P.A. for my fills. he also has a band and really understands all the ups and downs and ins and outs. you have to choose which surgery is right for you. since she does all types of wls, rny, band and ds...get her opinion. she doesnt sugar coat things and will be upfront about her recommendations. good luck on your journey.
I just had surgery on Tuesday.
I selected the band due to it being "less" invasive. My doc agreed. I was worried about what RNY might do to my body. I have personal friends who have had both and been successful with both. Please educate yourself completely before making a decision. Once you make it, you'll then know it's the right one for you!
Best of Luck!!
ps- I'm feeling so good, I would never have imagined!!!!!

Hi Shara
I chose the Gastric By-pass because of my eating habits. I like junk food and sweets and with the bypass, those foods make you sick. I would have never been successful with the Lap Band. I'm very happy with my decision as I have lost 150 pounds and I feel wonderful.
Have your consult with your surgeon and discuss those things with him and see what he says. If I can be of anymor ehelp, let me know.

Hi Shara,
This is worth reading, regarding your indecision:

I had Gastric Bypass because the Lap Band requires more will power than I have (sugar, fats). If I had that willpower, I wouldn't have needed ANY surgery!!! I feel that if I was going for an operation, it was going to be the procedure that would work best for me, a compulsive overeater, and for that, RNY Gastric Bypass won out hands down.
Good luck!
Karen

I think you need to assess how you have dieted in the past (and those pitfalls) and what your emotional issues may be. Dr. Ren is very good - I'm seeing Dr. Fielding.
I waffled between the two -- I like the speed of RNY weight loss, I like the restriction of the Band. In the long run, I am a "volume" eater and think I would be better served by having a "restriction" on volume. It is slower and requires a lot of behavior modification; I think that is what I need.
Whatever your decision, you need to make the right one for you. Do some honest soul searching on what you think you can do and which tool affords you the best support.
I am going with RNY. My surgery is 3 days from now WOOOHOO baby!!! Anyway. I went with gastric cause with my eating habits and knowing how much I like to munch I thought I could acheive the results I wanted and stay at my goal weight better with the RNY. Well good luck on your journey and keep us all updated!!!!

Hi Shara,
I chose the RNY because I wanted the permanency of it. I wanted to have the surgery, learn how to re-educate myself with my new tool to make myself healthy. I knew I would always have to visit my surgeon, have blood tests, take vitamins, load up on proteins and all that, but I didn't want to have to worry about fills and going to the doctor for that. I also didn't want to deal with the possibility of slippage or anything happening with a band, so my choice was the RNY.
I am totally happy with my choice.
Good luck to you in whatever you choose.
Sue
