Let's Talk HAIR.....
Hi Everyone: Sorry I haven't posted in a while - really busy at work and took, YES, another vacation! OK - my 90 days were up and I needed to GO!
OK - Let's talk "Hair Loss!" As most of you know, I'm going to be 5 months post-op on the 5th. I'm down a total of 77 lbs since I started this whole process. Down from a size 24 to a 16/18. Life is Good - Except....what's up with the HAIR? I know I read alot about how it isn't unusual to lose some of your hair. Believe me, I still have plenty but it is a little unnerving to wash you hair and find a lot on the shower floor! How long do I expect this to continue? I'm really good about getting in my protien and all of my supplements/vitamins. Am I missing something? I go back to my Nutritionist Thursday - guess I'll be discussing this with her as well. Thought I'd put it out there for all of you veterans!
Thanks as always - you're all so Great!
Hugs
Peggy
Hey Peggy!
Wow! 77 pounds in 5 months is fabulous! You go girl! Post new pics!! As far as hair loss is concerned they usually say 4-6 months, maybe a bit longer. It IS unnerving, but it DOES stop and the hair does grow back. I cut mine short (as you can see) and that helped disguise the thinning look. Now I just like it short!!
You must feel so wonderful! Congratulations!
xoxo

Hello...
HAIR LOSS AFTER WLS
According to Dr. Louis Flancbaum the author of: "The doctor's guide to weightloss surgery: How to make the decision that could save your life", 2001, pgs 69-70................................................
(paraphrased)
"Hair loss can occur with any form of stringent dieting and weight loss. After WLS 10-30% of patients will experience hair thinning or easily removed hair during combing. Protein and iron deficiencies are a common cause, and increasing both can help. If it occurs it will start around 3-6 months and stop around 6-9 months. This is because
immediately following WLS adequate protein intake is difficult and it takes about 3 months for the effects to become evident, therefore taking in additional protein via shakes/supplements at the time hair loss is seen is ineffective. There are also many other things including medications that can cause hair loss"
· Protein and calorie intake insufficiency
· iron deficiency
· mineral/vitamin insufficiency
· major systemic stress (surgery. trauma...)
· Chronic diseases
· Ace inhibitors for high BP
· Actigall taken to prevent gallstones
· allopurinal taken for gout
· anticoagulants, (ex coumadin)
· anti-depressants
· anti-thyroid medicine
· beta-blockers for high bp & heart disease
· birth control pills
· tagamet for stomach acid
· lithium-a mood stabilizer
TREATMENTS:
Increase protein intake (we need at least 60gms a day according to most sources, remember we malabsorb some we take in!), & make sure you are taking a good quality multivitamin.
Hair loss today = protein issues or trauma 3-4 mo ago, so halthy eating now will show up in few months!

Hi,
Wow 77lbs that's great!!! You can use Nioxin it realy helps with the thinning hair issue. I am a cosmotologist and also have used this on my self when I was loosing my hair from weight loss from using phentremine. You can ask your hair dresser if you can give her the money so she can pick some up for you. Average hair loss is 80 to 100 strands a day believe it or not. Well good luck.
Sheila
You are doing awesome. I am 5 days post op and have been using his product called ARBONNE THREMAL HAIR FUSION. I have been using it pre op since my hair is thin to begin with and my hair already feels fuller. I am hoping between protein and consistant use my hairloss isn't to bad. click on shop online at my website if interested

HEY PEGGY this was ONE of the hardest parts of the surgery
for me to deal with the HAIR thinning....
MY scalp showed tons in my heavy stylging
areas.
I unfortunately went thru this phase from between
months 3 and 4 and lasted thru 12 months.
NOW at 12 months i was at the surgeons goal too.
ITS hard but i promise you wont go totally bald!
HUGS
its not an easy phase
