Question for the ladies....

Nicole, This is a question that really only will/can be answered when you go throough the surgery. So many factors effect wt loss and how YOUR body will adjust. We can all share OUR experiences so you may know a TYPICAL result but again it will vary. I was just 30 YO when I had my RNY, I didn't wait until surgery to exercise I started 5 months prior and actually lost 45# in that time (30 in the first month), in my program they require a 10% preop wt loss, I am happy I did this it helped me prepare mentally and I was much healthier going into surgery and I got to goal I truly feel because of it! I started as a 44 B/C Mostly back fat! It may help u trim those legs ahead! I lost all of my breast tissue and was left with two very small flaps of skin. They looked strange on my large 5'9'' frame and out of proportion to say least I became a 36/38 barely A, I didn't have much droop as I was never big in 1st place. I decided to have breast augmentation and that really has helped me feel more in harmony w/ myself, worth every penny! EXCESS SKIN....MY philosophy is you fit in your skin or you don't..You say you don't want to feel bad after (loss of breasts), ask yourself do you feel bad now? If yes are you healthy now as a MO person? Many insurance companies pay for some plastic surgeries if medically necessary (They won't pay for augmentation! usualy only breast reduction with proper amoount of tissue removal) it may be a fight, but you can get some of it removed possibly (usually a panniculectomy)....If though this will deter you I say the chances are great you will have some amount of excess skin, no one knows how much...Age, gender, prior diet/weight changes, pregnancies all affect this and the best chance on has to control this is (although limited) exercise, water and protein....So if this is a huge issue think long and hard before you have the surgery; your concern is very real and some are very unhappy in their new sharpei bodies and sabotage and regain to fit in the loose skin, not saying this will be you, just something to consider.....Perhaps join : http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/plasticsurgery/ http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/GastricBypass-PlasticSurgery/ http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ossgplasticsurgery2/ http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WLSandPlasticSurgery/ http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/OSSG_Reconstructive_Plastic_Surgery/ great sites and look at before pictures and after....Excess skin may be by far the most distressing side-effect for people as we already come with altered self-esteem/body image!!! Hey Nicole... I have gone from a size 22-24-26 top to a 12-14 and can you imagine that I still wear the same bras as before surgery ?! My back is way too fat (even though I am down almost 80 lbs!) Honestly it seems like my cup size has gotten smaller but when I go to try on new bras I just get so frustrated that I am trying on the same size bra so I have yet to buy a new bra since my surgery over 1 year ago ! When I spoke to the plastic surgeon he said that I had plenty of breast tissue but that a lift would be beneficial. I have those lovely little rolls that stick out on top of my bra band on the side (under my arms) and have also given thought to getting rid of the bat wings ! My thighs and calves have gotten smaller... Thighs are a bit "skin-ny" though. If only we could repair all the damage being obese did to our bodies with just one miracle snap of the fingers. Good luck in your journey... -Terri
