This is my first post- I've been reading them for a few months.. Just got my ins. approval and date is 4/19-- the first person I told was my sister- her response "do you know you'll never be able to eat a normal meal again" I told her yes I would just smaller with emphasis on protein-- anything else I should say. I am worried about the fact that I'll always have to think about what to eat and how much protein it has- like today- we're having hot dogs and an angel hair pasta salad-- I wouldn't be able to do that after, right???

Sure you will! It is a tool and it is all about moderation not depervation! It May be a couple months before you are able to, but eventually you will! Bethany

I'm not surprised by the response you received. I can't tell you how many people said the same thing to me. Yes you will be able to eat a normal meal just in moderation. I'm not saying go back to eating all of the fattening foods you ate before surgery. Once and a while I treat myself to a souvalki. I pay for it in the toilet (ha!). GBS is a tool and you will understand once you have the surgery about moderation. I wouldn't eat hot dogs. That has loads of nitrate. Can't beleive I used to eat those things. I concentrate on eating protein like grilled chicken on the barbie. Lot's of grilled chicken ceasar salad. yes I eat the cheese. I need the calories. Well good luck with the surgery.

Jackie, I'm about six months out and I was pretty strict the first six months to maximize the honeymoon period. But, that's not to say I didn't have a tablespoon of macaroni and cheese once in a while or a few chocolate chips to satisfy that occasional craving for chocolate. What I find now is that I actually prefer the veggies, seasoned meats, etc. I like to cook. Saturday I prepared beef wellington, asparagus au gratin, and roasted red potatoes for my family. Because of gastric bypass, I ate about two-thirds of a cup of food total and was very satisfied. So, no I won't ever eat what Americans today consider a "normal meal" - i.e. too much, too fast. But, I'll make the most of the smaller portions that I eat. I do think it's important to be pretty strict in the beginning. That's when we reset our palates and learn to avoid the mindless eating that got us in trouble. When we've taken back control, we're comfortable making healthy choices most of the time and are satisfied with eating treats in moderation on occasion.

Thanks for your replies-- it helps-- I'm so nervous- I don't want to stick out like a sore thumb afterwards- we go out to eat a lot. My Doctor is Panemanglore-- he works with Dr. Caruana-- I'm having laparoscopic rny.

Eventually you will be able to eat a well normal meal again. Just not in mass quantity. I go out to eat with people and with the way I eat, people wouldn't even know I have had surgery. Marie
