RNY on 04/03/07 with
Hi my name is Yvette and I am getting more nervous than ever, but yet I am happy because I am going to start a new healthy life. I already stopped smoking and went to all my pre-test. I started my pre-op diet on sunday and lost 3 pounds so far. I am going through so many mixed emoitions now. Can anybody give me advise on the surgery and my emotions, I hope this is normal. Will there be alot of pain after surgery? Are the scars big ? Is Slim-Fast Optimum good for a Protein shake?? I will appreciate anyones advise and SUPPORT!!!! GOD BLESS

Relax Yvette-it's not that bad! I had my RNY 8 days ago and I am doing fine! The pain right after the surgery is handled well with the meds they give you and I have had a LOT of previous surgeries. This was not as bad as my gallbladder when I was in the hospital fo 11 days! I had my RNY done lap and the only real complaint about it was that the hospital was so darn HOT!!! We were all complaining about the heat, but there was nothing that could be done, so...my advice to you is bring a small fan to put by your bedside if your hospital tends to be warm. Albany Med did not have available. Also, keep in mind that the only way to get discharged is to pass gas!! Believe it or not, that was a hard thing for me to do. I ended up getting out 3 days postop and I've never been so excited to phooph!! Anyway, I just wanted you to know that I will keep you in my thoughts and wish you the very best. It will be fine! Feel free to ask me any other questions is you still have doubts, which, by the way I think is completely normal- I did! Take care. Jeannie

Your emotions are to be expected but know in your heart that you are doing the right thing for your health and trust God to carry you through this and it will help give you some peace of mind. I am 2 1/2 years post op for a laparoscopic RNY and about to go for plastic surgery. I have had about 4 surgeries in my life and the RNY was really not that bad. I was in a great hospital and the pain was managed very well with meds. I had surgery early in the morning and they had me up and walking that same night. The next day, I was entertaining guests and the day after that I went home. Going home was a little bit rough because I was uncomfortable. When they stitched me up, I had 7 little holes that sort of re-arranged my fat (so to speak) so I didn't bend in the same places that I used to! Hahahahaha. I also have a VERY high bed so that was a challenge to get into but overall, it was not that bad. In about a week, I was doing so much better. You can barely see my "bullet holes" now and I had no problems with them healing. I find that being informed, prepared, and a healthy mental outlook goes a long way in how you deal with things. Try to anticipate certain challenges and be prepared for them. Also remember that any discomfort you have is temporary but you are about to gain the weight loss that you have wanted and it is certainly worth it all. Good luck to you.
