Read, read, read. Talk, talk, talk. These are the best ideas I can offer. Read as much as you can on line. Write down the pros and cons of each. Review, think, review. Talk to others in the same physician's group to get their thoughts on their decision. Each one of us have our own reasons for the type of procedure that we go thru. There are side effects, good effects and questionable effects for any surgery. Take your time before you make your final decision. Good luck. Cathie

Take your time and read, learn as much as you can from everyone and everyplace. Make sure you take your time and look into everything! I wish you all the best! Debra P

Also, do some self-analysis work on what your own issues are, how each one benefits/detracts for your personal situation, your own long-term issues and what kind of changes you can or are willing to make...it's not an easy decision but if you take your time, read, discuss, perhaps even attend some support groups, you'll be okay. Good Luck!

Hi Sheila, It is a tough decision. I know for me, initially, I was lap band all the way. After attending a few information sessions (3 to be exact), I then had the opportunity to sit in the support groups, once with lapbanders and the other 2 times with the RNYers. After speaking to my doctor and to the many wonderful people I've met, that is what helped me switch over to the RNY. I must say that I have met several very successful lap banders. However, I have though met many more successful RNYers. I knew that if I were able to have ice cream and sweets that I probably wouldn't lose weight. Also, I have met a few people who had the lapband and then had the RNY about a year after because they weren't so happy with their results. Were they following the rules? I don't know this for a fact. This was also a very personal issue for me. I also wasn't sure about the adjustment part. Nobody can tell you, research, research, and research again. Again, I've met many successful lap banders...this is not trying to bash any whatsoever. But I am thrilled with my choice of having the RNY....7.5 months ago and down approximately -95lbs, something I truly didn't think would happen this quickly. Best of luck to you with whichever surgery you decide. Maryellen
