Good Morning! I was wondering how many people were diabetic before the WLS? Thanks for your response!

I was diabetic before surgery, now I am pill free and just check my blood once a day and generally it is below 100 which makes me a happy camper. Linda

Hi, I was diagnosed about two weeks before my surgery and had to take pills up to the surgery. Then I was reduced to one pill which I only had to take for a few months before my sugars were all normal. I am supposed to get my blood tests done by my primary this month and I anticipate that they should still all be normal. Sue

I was a type II diabetic pre op and was diagnosed 5 years prior. I was on 4 meds for diabetes (non insullin). I was taken off meds immediately after surgery and haven't taken a pill since. Now my fasting is between 75-85. Can't get any better than that!

Hi Janice - I was diabetic preop, on 1500 mg metformin & 10mg Actos per day and still not in very good control (partly a result of some steroids I had to take for 2 weeks almost a year before the surgery ). Postop, I've been off meds 3 years; I have to watch carefully and usually 'eat something' about every 4-5 hours or else I'll crash; usually try to stick to something small with a balance of protein/fat/carbs that will produce a reasonable glucose curve instead of a spike. I still can spike if I "get into" the wrong carbs, but it tends to drop back to normal much more quickly than it used to. I also notice I tend to 'dump' more readily than many - my guess is that it's the insulin response from the stuff hitting my small intestine, but no real way to prove it. Overall, very good control - A1Cs have been < 6 (generally 5.1-5.5 range)... FWIW, I had RNY; people having Lap Band can end up with different results from WLS because it doesn't have the same re-routing (similarly, other surgeries will have even different results). Good luck - ...Nick

Janice, I developed diabetes about 10 years prior to my gastric bypass surgery. I have not had to take any medication since the surgery. To me this is one of the greatest benefits of the surgery. My diabetes was one of the major drivers in my decision to have wls. Now I will on a very rare occasion go low, but it is very manageable. Take care, Mary

I was diagnosed with Diabetes in 2000. I was put on Glucophage and glipizide. They also wanted to put me on actos as well, but that's when I decided to do something about my health. I was also on high blood pressure meds and high cholesterol meds. When I left the hospital, all I was on was my blood pressure meds, and 1 week later, I was off of that one as well. Molly
