Hysterectomy determines open VS laparoscopic RNY?
I had a hysterectomy several years ago. The opening was a bikini cut. (Ha, Ha...what's a bikini?)
Well my surgeon said that he doesn't anticipate any problem doing it the less invasive way as opposed to open RNY, unless there is scar tissue present which might interfere.
This, for me, changes a lot of things. ( I know many, many members had open and are just fine...but I don't know if it's for me.)
In any case, are there other members who had a previous hysterectomy and were still able to have a laparoscopic RNY surgery?
Just wondering.
Peace - Diane
Hello Diane,
I did not have a Hysterectomy but I did have my gallbladder removed via an open surgery years ago. Dr. Singh was able to do Lap RNY on me without a problem. One of the things you need to remember and your surgeon will tell you this too... There is always a possibility that they have to open you. Lap is NOT a gaurantee.. If you have issues with that you should really call your surgeon and talk with him/her....
Hugs..

Hi Diane,
I had a hysterectomy 12 years ago, vertical cut though, not horizontal like yours. I had a laproscopic RNY this past 7/31. My surgeon is Arif Ahmad, in Port Jefferson. His specialty is Advanced Laproscopic Surgery, therefore, he spent the extra time (5.2 hours, but I also had my gallbladder removed and a hernia repair). He said that ANY other doctor who did not have this specialized training wouldn't have hesitated to cut me open. He knew how upset I was even thinking about that possibility pre-surgery.
If you surgeon is not an Advanced Laproscopic Surgeon, you should definitely look for one. Because after my open hysterectomy, my incsion opened and I had to have private duty nurses come to my home 3 times a day for a few months to wash out, clean and pack my opening. It was quire an awful experience. I thank God that I had Dr. Ahmad.
Good luck,
Maryellen
