OK, I'm hoping someone has some suggestions because surgeon seems to be clueless on this one. I'm am 4 months post op (Lap RNY), lost 80 lbs, I have somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 - 40 more to go. He tells me I've lost pretty quickly compared to others but not anything to be alarmed about. I am 5'9" large frame and today I weigh 212. Problem is I'm having dizzy spells, somedays worse then others, but generally I'm feeling a little foggy headed. Just not on top of my game at work like I used to be, I notice I'm more forgetful, etc... Also, hair is falling out, not in clumps, just noticable in the shower drain on a daily basis, where it used to only be noticeable every few days or a week. So surgeon did blood test, iron and b12 levels are fine. He suggests going to the nutritionist. I am quite ridiculous about counting my protein and water intake daily. I know for sure I am getting upwards of 70g of protien/day and 70 ounces of water/day. I am getting 2 fruits and a small salad each day and a small amount of some carbs daily. I walk 2 miles a day, 3 times a week I lift and do very vigorous water aerobics. Nutritionist will give me the same documentation I already have and refer to quite often... so I'm a bit frustrated. I've called my primary doc, labs are being sent and waiting for a call back from her for other suggestions. I'm thinking he didn't do enough tests when they drew blood, maybe a hormone imbalance going on? Some other vitamin deficiency perhaps he didn't check for? Anyone have this kinda stuff go on? Out of everything that could be going on this is VERY minor, but I do drive, and I don't like being dizzy while driving or when I'm walking down stairs at home alone, etc... Hopefully my primary has some other suggestions, but would like to hear some experiences from you all. Thanks! Renee

Hi Renee, How is your blood pressure? It sounds like it might be too low. Also: are you on any medications? One of mine (I have ben on it for years) had to be cut in half since I had the surgery because it made me dizzy. It's not a blood pressure med. or anything related to weight and/or my co-morbidities. Even so, the weightloss made my normal dose way too much. Have you considered seeing a Neurologist? Just some thoughts. Hugs, Karen

The only meds I take is prevacid for acid reflux (other than vitamins), nothing that would cause lightheadedness.... My BP was 105/72 which my surgeon and PCP feel is perfect. Might need to consider a Neurologist... Thanks for your input. Renee

Hi Renee. First of all, congrats on your success. How wonderful. What a transformation. I have been having dizziness since surgery as well. Dizziness can be related to so many things, that I think it's a good idea to follow up with your nutritionist or MD. A few factors that might cause dizziness: *Low blood pressure: As you lose weight, blood pressure can decrease. *Dehydration. It sounds like you're getting enough fluid, but it's possible you need more, especially if you're doing a lot of vigorous exercise. * Iron deficiency. Low iron, ferratin, folate levels. Have your doc run tests for this. * Low electrolytes. With the malabsortive effect of RNY, you could be low on electrolytes such as sodium or potassium. *Low blood sugar: do you notice what time of day you become dizzy? Are you a diabetic? If so, are you still on antidiabetic meds? You may need to cut down. Do you notice a relationship between when you've eaten and when you're dizzy? Rapid weight loss is a big change for the body to adapt to. Sometimes it just takes time to adjust and you experience side effects such as dizziness or getting cold easily. As you mentioned, it's best to follow up with an MD and have them evaluate you. Good luck and keep us posted! Hugs, Amy
