Hello All, I'm currently waiting for my surgery date (probably in march) but of course am planning ahead for my October vacation to key west. I realize I will only be 7 months out and need to be very careful about what I eat and drink but does anyone know of something non-sugary that I might be able to drink? I'd like to be able to have at least ONE drink while i'm on vacation

Hi Meridith I would talk to your surgeon directly. Our surgeons do not recommend any alcohol at all, especially that soon after surgery. Alcohol is high in sugars and carbs and I personally don't recommend it. Marie

Hi, I think this is a personal choice but you have to be careful with the choice you make. You have to remember that after gastric bypass everything falls right into your bowels and digests alot quicker which also includes alcohol. You will get drunk ALOT faster and dehydrate faster, so just be careful and make sure there is someone to watch you. I have drank a glass of wine and was fine but I have only done it a couple of times. More than one glass was too much for me and just put me to sleep. If you want to be safe just ask the doctor. We have the same surgeon. Good luck!

Hi there, well I have to say that I didn't listen to my surgeon who said NO alcohol at all.... and about 6 mths after surgery I had a drink. Diet coke and rum and I remember being drunk with that one drink. I would be very careful and do be sure to ask your doctors advice. I do drink once in a while now and I can drink a very slow shot of something OR a rum and diet coke. If I try mixed drinks I end up with really bad gas and stomach pain. I would suggest trying to stay away from the alcohol if possible.

In addition to what the others have said... these early months while you're losing weight at a rapid pace, your liver is working extra hard just to process the fat loss.... you don't need to add alcohol (even just one drink) to the stress your liver is under. personally, I would wait until the 1 yr mark before experimenting... OR until your weight loss slows to 1 lb per week or less just to play it safe.

I would not touch alcohol for a while your body would still be in recovery mode! I wouldn't take the chance with the liver. But if you insist I would go for Barcardi Breezers or anything with at least 2% alcohol.

MERIDITH best to discuss with your surgeon. MANY prefer no alcohol for 12 months and its nor for sugar reasons. THE alcohol may cause ulcers. ITs wasted calories during your window of rapid weight loss... good luck i know i didnt touch acholol for 18 months and this christmas i did enjoy a glass of sangria for the season with friends.
