Good evening! I have not met with a surgeon yet and would like to know exactly what dumping is? what protein shakes are best? Are there any ladies that have experienced problems with their menstrual since the body is not getting enough nutrients?

Hi Yolanda Dumping is what you get with the RNY when you eat anything high in sugars. Dumping comes in all sorts of ways. The worst is vomitting and/or diahrrhea. Its not fun You have to try Protien shakes because what is good for one may not be good for you. Plus, your tastes sometimes change after surgery so what you like before surgery, you may not like or be able to handle after surgery. You can order protein shake samples from www.vitalady.com before you buy large jugs. She sells Champion protein powder and it tastes good. As far as your monthly period, for me, nothing changed. Comes like clockwork every month. Others may have something different. Hope that helps and good luck with your journey.

Hey Yolanda, Welcome to the board. There are several different types of weight loss surgery available....RNY, Lapband, and Duodenal Switch are the 3 most popular. Dumping is a side effect of the RNY, it is when food passes too quickly through the artifical opening (the stoma) of your pouch into your intestines, causing a rapid rise in blood sugar levels. Some of the symptoms of dumping are profuse sweating, rapid heart beat, dizziness, vomiting, and in rare cases pooing yourself (i didn't know a nicer way to say it). While I do not think there are any offical statistics, the guestimate is that only about 50 percent of RNYers dump, and of those that do, many stop dumping several years after they have their RNY. Anything can cause a RNYer to dump (it depends on the person), but foods that are most associated with dumping are foods with sugar, white flour, or too much fat. Again it's very individual, and sometimes erratic. Some people do not dump for months, eat sugar, candy whatever, then one day they eat the same food that they ate yesterday and dump. One lady on the main forum, who rarely dumped, had one mixed drink 2 or 3 years out from her surgery and dumped to the extreme. She was throwing up, dizzy, actually passed out and pooed herself (that was an extreme example). I've never dealt with dumping on a personal level (DSers do not dump), but in most cases from my understanding it passes quickly within a 1/2 hour to 45 minutes after it starts. In terms of protein shakes, it really depends on you. Tastes do change after surgery, but I'd highly recommend getting the profect or the IDS protein vials for immediately after post op. They are highly concentrated protein shakes (3 oz with 25 to 42 grams of protein), and be extremely useful post op when you can't eat that much. As for the menstral issue, again I'm a guy, I have no personal experience, but if you have low iron issues now, they will continue after surgery, and some women develop low iron after surgery and need to suppliment. This is the reason that if you have a surgery that employs malabsorbtion (RNY and DS) you will need to have blood work done on a regular basis for the rest of your life post op (most surgeons do it every 6 months to a year after you hit the 2 year mark).
