so this is the story....i had a lap gall bladder removal like 2 years ago. now i'm scheduled to have a lap RNY during a school break (i'm a therapist for a school district). however the doc says there is a chance it might have to be open if there are adhesions. my question is....how many of you out there have had the same situation and were fine? or how many were not fine and had to be open. if it turns out to be open i wont have enough time to take off from work. please help ease my nerves.

Hi Kim, I think we met in the summer at a support group meeting. I had gallbladder surgery in 2000 and lap rny Sept 19th. Dr Mecenas didn't really comment on the adhesions but he did say that if things didn't work out laproscopically he would perform it open. I was out a total of 14 school days. I think we work for the same district. Are you covered under the BTA contract? If you are you are eligible for the sick bank if you donated a day at the beginning of the year. Let me know how things are going for you. Joyce

Hi, If you have had abdominal surgeries before means you most likely have scar tissue(adhesions) from it. Usually a surgeon can perform the surgery lap. even if you have had prior adbomen surgeries but I am assuming if there is way too many adhesions in combination w/not wanting to take any chances, most surgeons will just open you up to save the risk of developing complications/nicking something from him not opening you up. Surgeons by law just need to tell you that there is always a risk that a lap. surgery might turn into an open surgery. I have had three open adbominal surgeries(my RNY was done lap though) and all I have scar running down my belly, no biggie in my opinion. All three of those surgeries where planned prior to the surgery to be open not lap so they werent a spur of the moment 'justs open her up' thing. No one wanted to take any chances on me. Good luck!

Hi, just had my surgery on 1/2/07 and I have had 6 abdominal surgeries in the past, everything went as planned and they also removed my gall bladder, everyone is individual and the amount of scar tissue varies, my surgeon felt there would be no problem, Chris
