Hello Catherine.....First of all congrats on having your date. You are so close. It is normal to get scared espically right before surgery. However you cant think of it as not eating, it is a tool that will help you learn how to eat again, only this time you will be training yourself to eat the right amounts and the right types of foods. Initially you will have not much of an apppetite anyway..it will slowly come back but by that time you will know what you should be doing. I have to tell you one of my biggest fears was i would never be able to eat pizza again....I love pizza its my favorite food in the world. Well let me tell you i eat pizza and i do often...however where i used to to 2 slices and still want more, i eat half to 3/4 of a slice minus the crust at the end and i am satisfied. You will be able to eat "normal foods" again. BUt when you can eat normal foods again you will most likely know what you should be doing and have been already retrained. Let me tell you this decision to have this surgery was the best decision i have ever made. I was scared also as i think every one here was right before. But you will be ok. AND as someone special told me on this board very early on....NOTHING TASTES AS GOOD AS BEING THIN FEELS...and that is so true. Best of luck to you...We are here for you. LisaMarie

Hi Catherine! You have made a brave decision to have this surgery!!! I am grateful that such an option is available for us. I had the surgery to improve my life!!! Food and eating were the main focus of my life prior to the surgery. Now I am learning to put my self first and take care of my body so I can enjoy all of the things I had to give up due to my being over weight. One of my favorite sayings taken from the boards is EAT TO LIVE NOT LIVE TO EAT!!!!!! You can do it!!!! Good luck, LC

Hello CAtherine. I had my surgery 11/22 and I also thought I would miss eating sooooo much. So far I havent. I am not hungry and have to force myself to eat. Make sure you have lots of other stuff to do. Do you work outside the home full time? I dont right now but when this weight comes off I am going to find something to help fill my days. I do read a LOT, I clean out the latest releases at the library each week. I do miss my popcorn when I watch tv but have my drink next to me. I am anxious to have a bite of pizza. You can do it!! Good luck. Kathy

Hi Catherine, I can't speak from experience yet as I am still in the beginning stages of the WLS process, but I know that this is the right decision for me and you have made a brave and life changing decision for yourself. You deserve to be happy and healthy. Go for it and know that the people here will be there for you. Best of Luck, Janet

Catherine: Hello ! I am not quite sure by your post if this is typical preop jitters or something quite different? Tell us more of what you are thinking & feeling. How long have you been researching WLS? Do you feel you have had enough time to make a very educated and informed decision? Do you know the typical risks, benefits, and lifestyle changes required of you longterm for success? Do you have a support system of friends/family members and online and in person support groups? Have you been attending support groups preop? Are you comfortable knowing all the typical changes you will go through emotionally, physically and nutritionally? Have you gotten all your affairs in order so when you're at home recovering you can have the least amount of stress possible? (Clean the house, prep for the fluids, vitamins, sugar free popsicles, broth etc you will need) for the first few weeks? Have you met with a therapist preop? Can you set up appointments now and postop, I HIGHLY recommend this for a year during the transition period! A lot happens in the first year emotionally/spiritually for folks, some is not easy either and unexpected....Have you met with a dietician, do you know your postop eating plan (many are on NO FOOD for 2 wk and only liquids), have you considered how you will get thru this, have variety, support at home to get u thru also? it is quitechallenging u r right to no longer have food to fill the deep emotional hole many of us feed, for 2 wk not having something to chew is a challenge for man (was for me!) but not eating during this time of healing is very important, although some do advance their diet early it can cause major complications. How can we help? What do you want to know? Are you ournaling your feelings? I find if you write a list of all the reasons you are having wls for YOURSELF (no one else no spouse, friend, doctor but for YOU!) helps on the bumpy road! Write your fears out and work on alleviating them, turning them over to your higher power if you have one to guide you to inner peace w/ your decision. Post here often. You are not alone, if hundreds of thousands of people each year who are morbidly obese (~ 180,000) last yr alone in US can get through the first few weeks/months with these challenges, know you too can do it! Consider being as positive as possible, the loss of food needs to be mourned it is a loss & do not avoid it or deny it or bury it, look at it instead, feel it, so you can move through and beyond it! We can help you do this, TOGETHER! hugs you're not alone..and if thei is to scary and doesn't feel right now then up until they put you on the table YOU are in control and can say NO!
