Hi all, I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving. I am looking for some EASY beginner exercise ideas. The nutritionist told me to add some cardio into my evening routine along with my morning walking. I found an exercise video that looked good and tried it. Let me just say....I did the first 5 minutes and when the woman said, "ok warm-up's over, let start exercising", I thought, OH MY GOD, that was just the warm up!! I guess I am more out of shape than I thought! I have to meet with my nutritionist again in 2 months, so my goal is to lose at least half of my 10%, hopefully more, and get my clearances out of the way. I already called and set up the psych eval and met with my PCP. I have to go Monday for a bunch of blood work and set up a sleep study. I also have to take Prilosec OTC, a multi-vitamin and Citrical daily (is this normal?)

Janet: I found that the Leslie Sansone's Walk Away The Pounds Videos (*she has many some come in packs of 1, 2, 4 miles etc) a great asset to me early on and I was 320# at 5'9'' (47 BMI), especially if I could NOT walk outside when it was very cold (BRRRRRR)! Curves was another great thing for me 2 yrs postop! I suggest trying the video store to rent &/or the library to borrow a few videos before buying as well! You may get a copy of hers on Ebay cheap or perhaps here new (I think Walmart, Target, Barnes & Noble, or Borders all have them as well). http://www.lesliesansone.com/ Maybe some mild yoga/pilates/taichi? I know there are also exercise for bedridden (yoga in bed) http://www.yogainbeddvd.com/ or http://www.stretch.com/bedtop.htm There are chair exercises that you could do. Check out http://www.sitandbefit.com/ This woman has an exercise on PBS and lots of different sit and be fit exercise videos, such as for arthritis, osteoporosis, strokes, MS, etc. Or check out http://www.collagevideo.com for lots of exercise videos for all levels, including the sit and be fit videos. You might want to check out Tai Chi also, it is slow movements, good for balance, strengthening, etc. If you get the videos then you can start and stop as your physical needs require. Postop it is typically recommended to take a good multivitamin (chewable at first, either Centrum or a coouple flinstones), calcium 1,500mg +/- a day split in 3-4 doses of 500mg each based on labs citrical is a good OTC choice (*they have chewables for early postop but some do not like the cost or taste! they do have 35 cal each and 3-5g carbs each as well) or online many use UpcalD a powdered form easily mixed in liquid, www.bethsproteinboutique.com or www.vitalady.com has those 227 doses in a canister for ~ $20 +/- pre S/H. I still use it for 1/2 my Ca+ a day and citrical for other half! I take 2000mg day total. Most also give Sublingual B12 (I use springvaley brand from walmart 60 doses is $5-6) it is actually a B complex SL with 1,200mcg B12 init, cherry flavor not bad at all, others go to GNC and get the SL tabs. Prilosec (or another Proton Pump Inhibitotr such as aciphex, previcid, nexium, protonix etc) or a H2 blocker such as Zantac, tagamet or Pepcid, is used by many surgeons postop 6-12 month to decrease risk of ulcers, they probably can give u a script (cheaper than buying OTC!) and some use Actigall (Urisodiol) to help prevent gall stones, not all surgeons but many, *mine did! Other suppliments are based on labs you many need extra Magnesium, Zinc, Selenium, Copper, Iron, Vit A, D or E, B6 or B1 (thiamine), Folate or Potassium postop. Usually get a Dexascan for bone denisty as well at yrs 1, and every 1-3 yrs after based on results of that and Calcium/Parathyroid blood levels. Hi Janet, I used to use these videos often by Kelly Bliss who is a plus sized excercise guru. There are a variety of different levels of workout: http://kellybliss.com/store/products.php?category_id=13 Also, just goin' for a walk at your own pace is a good way to get exercise. As you become more fit, you can increase the intensity to suit your own needs. All the vitamins, etc are part of the gastric bypass regime and are good to get used to taking now to make it a habit. The prilosec will help prevent the formation of ulcers, and vitamins and calcium are just plain good for you and will be vital to take daily for the rest of your life once you've had the surgery. Sounds like you're well on your way!! Yahoo!!!!! Hugs, Amy
