Hi all! I was told by a friend that if I have the surgery I have to give up coffee and soda, but I see from some of the posts that that may not be true? I am trying to cut down on my coffee intake, which is VERY difficult for me. Do I really need to do this? Not that I won't.... but gosh I LOVE my coffee :-)

Ok Here I am the major coffee addict!!! My screen name even contains ( java ) Well what my surgeon told me was that I should cut way back and drink decaf. Well I must say that I have cut way back on my caffeine, but still drink it all day long. I did go to all decaf before surgery and during the first few months. Also the NUT had said that caffeine inhibits weight loss, can't remember the reasons why but, something to do with metabolism and it also can cause dehydration. So I really try to drink decaf most of the time but there are days like today that I drank a lot of caffeine. Anyway that is my take on it. I figure I gave up cigarettes 4 1/2 years ago another major addiction, I have given up all my bad foods (sweets, junk food, fast food for the most part) I still munch here and there but try to munch on good stuff. So I guess if coffee is the only really bad thing I do than so be it. Hope this helps, Shannon

Hi Janet, My surgeon says NO caffeine and NO carbonated beverages...and the nutritionist added "EVER!" I got used to it already and now the smell of coffee brewing makes me sick. I used to be a 10-cup-a-day-of-caffeine person as well! -Karen

Hi Janet, The idea of avoiding coffee is primarily about the fact that it is very acidic and can increase your risk for developing gastric ulcers. I did avoid coffee for the first few months after surgery, but like Andi (too funny!) I am a coffee-holic, and while I usually only drink 2 cups a day, god help the person who tries to get in the way of me and my coffee. We are all working on finding different ways of managing stress, emotion, and other varieties of hungers. If you can quit drinking coffee a few days to a week prior to surgery, your gut will be in better shape, and you'll get past the coffee withdrawel headache prior to surgery (one less pain post op). The rest is your choice. As you can see, we all make different choices! Hugs to you. Hope you got the links I sent you. Amy

Hi Amy! I'd love to be your friend, this journey is so much more fun with a buddy to laugh with.....who else is going to understand the whole Biotin thing? I can't deal with surgeons and/or nutritionists who go can't have that ever again no how no way...uhh that's not how i live my life, i make choices, some are good (Good DOG) some are bad (get the rolled up newspaper) but i make them and i forge ahead. Janet, As you can see many still have caffeine, I know they say not to but I for one have my 1 Archive One in the morning and try to make that the only caffeine that I have BUT there are days when I have Diet Coke and I am not sure if that is the best thing to do but for now that is my fix. In time I would like to STOP the Diet Coke and only have it at special times but one day at a time. Well I wish you the best hun ~hugs~ Debra P

My surgeon says no to them and i follow his rules as best i can. THESE two areas are in control. BUT i have other areas that i need more strength with right now. I would see what the surgeon you choose feels on these issues and thats really what should matter the most for you. GOOD LUCK! I was a diet pepsi addict pre op and still have not had soda post op!
