lapband vs rny
Hi,
Sorry this statement needs correction because that's a myth.
You lose slower with lap band, but you can lose as much as you want with it.
I have lost 119 pounds in a year....92 of it since being banded. I know one lady who has lost 150 pounds. Well she's probably lost more, I haven't talked to her in awhile.

Sue:
I made my decision by doing research.
I was all for the lapband and that is what I was going to have done, which I knew I would have to self pay (BCBS doesn't pay for it).
But in the end I decided I didn't want to go in for the fills or other things.
You should do some research, the lapband may be for you.
They both are tools and both have good and bad and in the end it will be up to you to decide.
Check out lapbandtalk.com and OH forum for lapband.
Good luck with your quest.

Sue,
I had always planned on going for the Lapband until I was on this site. What I tell everyone is to take a look at the Pro's and Con's of both procedures and then be honest with yourself and figure out which would be best for you. This is what I did and when weighing the pros and cons of both I decided that the RNY would be a better option for me.
Good luck with you decision and if you need anything don't hesitate to ask.

Sue,
I agree with Robert, you really need to read as much on both and maybe make a list of the good and bad of both for you, that might help you make that choice. What every one your chose know we are always here for support.
I wish you all the best hun....
Oh yeah I had RNY because I needed more respriction then the lap band could give me with the eating sugars......
Take care

Hi Sue,
I did research too, and felt that I wanted a permanent change. I also did not want to have to deal with fills, just healing from the RNY and learning how to live with my new stomach. I know people who've had the band and done wonderfully, it was just not the way to go for me.
Whatever you choose, good luck and good health.

I didn't have either, but when deciding to have the DS, i reviewed long term statistics for all surgeries, and found the one that best matched my needs.
Have you gone to the lap band forum? The RNY fourm?
A surgeons suggestions can be helpful, but most surgeons will push you towards one surgery or another based on which surgery they feel most comfortable doing. The first surgeon I went to didn't perform the DS, and spent time trying to talk me out of it. It's best if you decide which surgery is best for you based on all available information.

PS RNYers and Lap banders lose about the same amount of weight according to statistcs at 5 years out. Although RNYers lose the weight faster, it can take up to 2-3 years to lose all your weight with the Lap band.
Sue like everyone has stated you must research both options in depth and then decide for yourself. I am a bandster and I am happy with my choice. It was my experience that some surgeons will try to steer you in one direction or the other. Both have pros and cons and as far as getting a fill in my band it is an absolute pice of cake. Although it might not sound plesant it is less difficult than getting an injection truly easy.
Some people I have met told me they chose the gastric bypass because you loose more weight and it simply is not true. This is what I learned. Both gastric and lapband patients loose the same weight five years after surgery. Gastric bypass patients loose it faster up front because their procedure is both restrictive and malabsorbtive thus rapid weight loss. I had my baning last January and I am down 60lbs and still want to lose another 30-40 to get to goal. Going into this I needed to loose 100lbs and I chose the lap band. Currently I am struggling somewhat with changing the bad habits that got me to morbid obesity in the first place. With the band we don't have dumping but we can get stuck. Some folks have told me they went with the bypass for the dumping because they don't trust themselves to make the right food choices which is a valid point as well. Remember both procedureds suceed and both can fail if we don't change the way we think about food.
Bottomline is you and only you know whats right for you.
Best of luck
Kenny
