What kind of calcium do you take?
LC:
Hello!
For a RNY Bypaser, Calcium CITRATE is the form of calcium preferred/recommended. This is due to the fact that the pouch has little/no stomach acid for absorption of calcium carbonate (the form of calcium in most OTC supplements).
Citrical tabs and generic calcium citrate are about all there is, the citrical chews you are using is just about all that is available in stores (that I have found in 4 yrs) in the way of non-pills. It is quite expensive and personally for 35 cal and 3-5g carbs in a chew needing 4 day longterm I'd rather eat my calories/carbs! J
But early on it is an option.
Unfortunately we are not like Lapbanders who can use things like TUMS ***they do not have malabsorption issues as we do. Tums or any calcium carbonate is simply a wasted expense, waste of your bones and can add to risk of kidney stones as well! (*something the RNY also increases our risk for!)
GNC didn't have any liquid/powdered/chewable citrate form of calcium last I checked a month ago!? I try to keep up on this for my support group
~Prices are from when I checked earlier in 2006...***
Now what I personally recommend for now and well forever if you don't like pills (what I use) is a product called UpCalD, it is powdered calcium citrate and fairly inexpensive! *I out 2 doses day in my shakes and use citrical tabs for other 2 doses...

I did take the creamy bites first 2 weeks after surgery and then switched to the calcium citrate tablets from the Vitamin Shoppe and I just crush them with a pill crusher I bought at the drug store. I take it with my shakes and it's 4 tablet=1000 mgs but my surgeon only requires I have 1200 mg a day of calicum citrate. I take 5 tablets a day crushed and they have absolutely no taste at all.
Hey LC!
I have struggled with the Horsepills...they are HUGE! I had bought a huge bottle of generic Citrical+D...No luck getting them down, even broken into pieces.
Now I am taking a Twinlabs product: Chewable Calcium Citrate. Vitamin World sells them for $11.59/bottle or 60 wafers. Four wafers = 1000 mg Cal. Citrate and 400 IU Vitamin D, plus 500mg Magnesium. Dr. Garber only requires 1000mg a day so 4 wafers is the full daily requirement.
They taste kind of fruity, kind of chalky...but they go (and stay!) down. That's the whole point.
They are also sold at http://www.vitacost.com/Twinlab-Calcium-Citrate
Good luck!
Karen
