Starting To Miss Fried Food

Will I ever have a fried piece of chicken or fried piece of fish? Everytime I smell it cooking I want to sneak a piece just to satisfy my want. I always say that if I had a small piece it would settle me. But I'm scared of creating a blockage so I don't touch the stuff. I am in the mushy food stage now but when I hit the solid foods stage is it legal to have a small amount of fried food? Or is it completely forbidden?

Hey there. I had surgery on 10/4 also, and i've had mozzarella sticks (2) and fried haddock. The haddock is awesome, and i peeled most of the batting off, but still had a little of it. It was so good, and satisfying. Give it a try. It shouldn't hurt ya at all. I have been fine with fish so far for 2 weeks now.

Well, I tired it and I had no problems. I thank God. Unfortunately fried is the only I can eat fresh fish. I fried it but I took off the skin and batter after it was fried. I basically just had the meat of the fi**** worked with no problems. Thanks for your advice.

Tonetta, Once you are out a while it should not hurt but know that the goal should be to eat the better foods but sometimes we get those craving and having a little might help but please watch the slope because sometimes when we bring those things back we want more and more. It is something only you know and will learn what you can and can not have to make this work for YOU!! ~hugs~ I wish you all the best hun. Debra P

Hello Tonetta, With my Bariatric Group and Nutrition Group, Fried Foods are pretty much off limits. Personally, I would try to avoid it, especially so early out. I had my surgery on 9/18 and at this point I would not dare to try something fried. If you do decided to have it remember that fried foods can also make you dump as well as sugar. For me personally it is not worth the risk. Not to mention what we just put ourselves through to be able to achieve weight loss.... Will the Fried Fat Laden food be worth it? We began this journey because we are all out of control with eating bad foods. Will having this fried fish ONCE satisfy you? OR... Will it turn into a routine? Just think about what brought you to this point and think about wether it will be worth it? That is just my two cents. Lori

I thank you for your two cents. Didn't realize fried foods made you dump. The only reason why I risked it was because I can not tolerate fresh fish any other way. I did drain it well and I removed the batter and skin before I ate it. I chewed it for a long time before I swallowed it also and everything worked out.

I don't have any first hand experience...DSers dont' dump, but if you do try it, be at home. I've read posts by RNYers who've dumped after eating fried food for the first time, and even worse, there was a man on the Men's forum, who ended up having explosive DHR because of tasting a few bites of fried food. Unfortuantely he wasn't at home and he ended up having a very embarrassing time because he didn't make it to the bath room. Most of all I'd recommend you follow your surgeons instructions. Most surgeons or their Nutritionists give you a list of foods that are acceptable. You should try to eat those types of food. Scott

The doctor said eat plenty of fish for the protein. But unfortunately fried is the only way I can tolerate fresh fish. But I took the risk. I made sure I removed the skin and the batter and I made sure I chewed it for a long time before swallowing. And thankfully it worked out. Thanks for the advice!!

I would definitely wait. It is very soon for you. The doctors feel that this is the time that you should be trying to start new habits of eating healthy choices. I eat fried food occasionally but if it is too greasy I get very sick and just isn't worth it to me. I try to soak up as much of the grease I can with a paper towel. But as I said.. I don't eat fried foods too often. Good luck! ~Angel 255/222/126 at Goal! Highest/day of surg/now

Knowing I can't have it is making me miss it. Before surgery it was my choice to have it or not. I did not have it that often but I had it. When it comes to fresh fish, fried is the only way I can tolerate it. And because I need the protein I had to take the chance. I wound up removing the skin and the batter so I was only eating the meat of the fish. Thankfully I did not have any problems. I chopped it up well and chewed it a long time before I swallowed it. Everything worked out well with no problems and I got my protein in.
