Another one on Gastric or Lap Band????
Hi all. Have been 2 times to a seminar for WLS and had originally decided one year ago that I would have the lap band surgery done and then I didn't do it and joined WW. Well, that didn't do much good and then I thought that the gastric bypass would be better for me to lose about 100lbs. One of my concerns is the lack of absorbtion and the thought that I won't be able to keep healthy. How do people really handle those issues. I should also say that I'm 53 and have a few co-morbid conditions which concern me. I just want to live healthy and live long enough to enjoy grandkids one day. Any thoughts on this would be welcomed.
PS....I'm starting the process of the testing and the nutrition part and hope to have surgery in the spring. Thanks a lot. Lots of good successes here I see too! Hope to be one myself one day too

Hey Susan,
With any malabsorbtion surgery, you deal with the possibility of vitamin deficiencies. Hence the reason that RNYers and DSers commit to life long follow up. To be honest it's very controllable if you take your vitamins on a regular basis, and have annual blood work (some surgeons require semi annual blood work), to make sure you are getting enough.
I had the DS knowing that I'd have to take vitamins several times a day. Why did I have the DS? Because statistically I'd have the best chance of getting to goal, and keeping the weight off. There is a post from a couple of days ago, that I highly recommend you read.

Hello Susan F
Read Beam Me Up Scottie profile and J Catlady5 post on 10/17 both are very full of information. Also research, research and more research also pray for the right answer for you. You are the only one that knows what surgery will be best for you.
I am trying to have RNY myself, but after reading scottie profile DS sounds like something I am interested in, just depends on insurance. I hope this helps you

Thanks Tammy for your advice. I did read JCatlady5's post and there's a LOT of info to read. I was also looking at some of your blog and see that you're going through a bit of a hard time yourself. I know about back pain too and wish I could have this done yesterday (if you know what I mean). Good luck to you too.
