Nothing with the Capital Health Obesity Network makes sense...
I jus****ch on here... So many people waiting to be seen, over 2000 patients all alike on a waiting list.... for what can amount to decades.
Then I watch a video recently posted, with the patient living in Fredericton -- referral sent August 2010, and is 'invited' to the information session in June 2011. The word 'invited' irks me so much. 'Invited' to a chance at a new, healthier life?' Why does someone need to be 'invited' to be actively seeking a necessary medication intervention to become a healthy, living person again. Who at Capital Health decides who gets the special 'invitations' and who is shut out at the gate?
If we were all drug addicts or alcoholics, we could have immediate care right at this moment if need be. Because we're fat.. we wait on a waiting list that keeps building while we rot... or die...
What about the patients who were referred in the 1990s to 2010 *****side in this province?
Don't get me wrong -- I celebrate and am happy for those who are the 'chosen ones'. I just really believe that people who have waited forever on the lists for the province they reside in should be seen before people coming from other provinces.
People on here a few weeks ago were signing petitions, offering to volunteer their services to Capital Health -- I wanted to scream -- "Shake your heads".
It's not that they're bombarded, and are unable to do their jobs. WLS is elective surgery and is only booked so much OR time. Two surgeries a week is standard for any province in NS because it is an elective surgery.
It is Obesity Networks way of chosing people that needs to be looked into. Nothing there makes sense. Primary list by co-morbidities, secondary list alphabetically. People out of province seen to before local, people with no co-morbities being operated on before the primary list people. Nothing adds up. There is no rhyme or reason -- people are hand-chosen and that is what makes it unfair.
I just believe that how they treat patients waiting, and how they hand select those they choose to help is rather ****ty. If there was a petition circulating that would get out outside agency to review that, I'd rally for signatures every waking moment of my day.

Hi there,
Just to note, as I am the creator of said video, I am just in Fredericton NB temporarily. I am a NS resident though. I just came here for a small bit of time for educational purposes. I was advised from MSI not to apply for a NB medicare.
What was very disturbing to me a few weeks ago, people were calling their office and hearing that they didn't even have their referrals anymore. Some had been lost. How or why, I don't know. They had even lost mine until I called and helped them find me in a pile of charts apparently.
I totally get your frustration. My mother is on an 11 year waiting list in another province. I think a lot of people will agree with you in that the process is somewhat unorganized. I don't know what they explicitly do in their selections but it would be a good question to ask them.
All the best and with much respect!
Chris :)

Carly,
Maybe it's time for you and I to start knocking some heads in there!!!
I have tried and tried my damnest to get some attention to this. I'm willing to go in there and see what the hell is going on, but it seems nobody wants to step on their toes at the clinic. Well I have nothing to fear or lose and I feel unless something gets said, they'll just keep doing as they please!
I don't think that is right that they can hold people's lives in their hands. And I also don't think the nutritionist should be part of a job with some weight loss program that costs thousands of dollars. She said my support group would be conflict of interest........I think THAT IS MORE OF A CONFLICT!!! Especially when she is suggesting waiting patients to sign up and pay---does she get commission for recruiting! Hmmm?!!
Well you all know how I feel, maybe it's because I'm on the neutral ground and see things differently, but what I do see is DEFINITELY NOT A GOOD WORKING SYSTEM!!
FYI: Up until this year I had owned and operated an outsourcing administrative business, my job as a specialists was to go into businesses that were being micro-managed or red-flagged and fix up their books & administration. My business partner and I also provided services to set up organizational structure programs for these clients and teach all the staff how to properlly run their office with these plans in place. ........From what I hear, this clinic is in dire need of a structural plan to make it work! No company, especially in our Health Care facilities should ever be losing patients referrals!!!! Isn't this supposed to be protected confidential documents??!!!!!
I just read an article last night that in Ontario someone wrote to their Ombudsman and not only did he sit up and pay attention, but actually got involved with fixing their wait times! Here's the link for NS's Ombudsman: www.gov.ns.ca/ombu/how-we-can-help.htm
Let's kick some butt Carly!!!

Hi Chris,
In no way was I intending to single you out as part of the problem, but only to use the story you told as a way to get my point across. I've read other posts of yours that said that your Mom was being called for an information session in May/June in Halifax as well, so whatever province or however you're handling this is not my concern. I totally agree with doing whatever needs to be done to take your own life into your own hands, doing what's necessary -- being pro-active and making things happen. Believe me.... I would do exactly the same thing if I could. I am not judging anyone for how they make this happen for themselves.
I was merely using this as an example of how messed up Capital Health Obesity Network is, whether you look at the province someone resides in, what the patient's health issues are, or how long they have waited. Things at the Obesity Network don't make sense. I just believe that someone should be regulating how things are done there.
My referral for WLS was sent in February 1998 (1999?). It went to Dr. MacDonald's office, and when he relocated, it was passed on to the Obesity Network when it was opened. However, how they place people for surgery is messed up. I can only talk from personal experience that my health has drastically been failing, and Obesity Network couldn't give one sweet f*ck what is different.
I agree with having a triage as such, and people's health and willingness to help themselves assessed. I also am a firm believer that regardless of someone's health or co-morbidities, local people should be treated by their own local healthcare prior to people from other provinces. Especially since MSI will not cover a patient going from Nova Scotia to any other province because there is an option in place here where they can be treated. The same should be in reverse.
I've asked how they create their waiting list. The primary list is for people with co-morbidities by referral date. That totally makes sense. The secondary list is for people who don't. However this list is sorted alphabetically, not by the date of their referral. There are over 2000 people waiting for surgery, primary list holds steady at about 500.
Picture waiting in the Emergency Room to be seen by a ER doctor for a gall bladder attack, which needs to be dealt with, but ambulances keep coming. Even ambulances just transferring patients from other hospitals they could have been treated at in their own province.
It would be like the Emerge triaging people alphabetically after the trauma rooms are full. It's discouraging and sickening and messed up.
Coreena -- what bothers me so much is how you're left out of being able to be followed up or treated by any part of the Obesity Network 'team'. I think the Obesity Network is a farce. It infuriates me more than would be suitable to express on here.

Hi Carly,
Yeah I totally get you and I know you aren't judging. I can't beleive that you've been on the referral list since 1997!!! That is completely unacceptable! Stupid question, but are you certain they have it?
Funny thing is to that I should add, is that mom did get the call last week from Diana explaining that she no longer qualified for the procedure because they hadn't recognized before that she was out of province. What's that all about? It took them a year and an invite to figure that out. She's been thinking for over the past year that she could do this and come to find out a year later, she in fact could not. So no she waits for the Moncton site. So if it's any consolation, they did do the right thing and removed mom from the list altogether. Their charts, files, and info seems very disorganized and I fear that their rankings may not be cons**** It's a theory. They cannot be maintaining our info in a database at all. It's impossible. As a health care provider myself (Respiratory Therapist), I have never in all my experience working in hospitals ever had such difficulty in receiving correct information or complete incompetence. And honestly, I feel like I can not say a word. I feel like they can hold this surgery over me and if I am not condusive to their "program," I would be relinquished of the opportunity for this surgery. They shouldn't and god knows there are regulations and enforcements to prevent it, but people can still negatively affect your life.
Now after surgery, I am going to have a few things to personally say to "the team." And trust me, nothing will hold me back. With some diplomacy and much respect, I will make a point (and I cannot wait).
All in all, I am personally disgusted that you have been waiting since 1997. That is beyond unacceptable. Why am I ahead of you?? That makes no sense!
Looking forward to hearing back from you!!

Hey, I have been referred first to Dr. MacDonald in 1996 (?) and then to the Obesity Clinic in 2005, and never got anything more than a large assessment form and a promise for a consult within a year. I decided to do the research on the co morbidities, what it costs for surgery, and what it's costing the province in chronic diseases caused or exaserbated by obesity. Guess what? Its actually CHEAPER for them to do MORE surgery than to keep up the current programs for overweight people. I took my findings to the Health department, and have hit a roadblock. The recognise the numbers, but there is still a lot of discrimination against WLS that needs to be addressed. I had an assistant to my local MLA say to me, well that's not really in the same category as a 'real' disease, as ppl have done this to themselves. My reply was that there are ALOT of lifestyle related conditions that are already covered, and this should be too... if I got a spot on my lung, they would remove it before it became cancerous, even if I smoked every day of my life. This is a double standard, and they need to start realizing that it's not just eat less and exercise more, there are people who need additional tools, such as WLS that will be healthier and in turn cost the system less in the long run. I seriously want to to raise awareness around this issue, and don't intend to let it go. I have booked a lap band surgery for the end of June, which I am paying for myself, as it's no longer an option to wait. 270lbs, hypertension, sleep apnea, bad knees, and pre diabetic. I am done waiting for my own health, but am more than willing to put myself on the line to help others fighting the battle with our health system!!
Chris, you would be placed ahead of me because of your diabetes. I don't get how you were called against other people who were longer on the waiting list. Being called upon to start the process so soon is great for you, but unfair to other people with same health issues.
Depends on how long you are living out of province, but I wouldn't share that with anyone on here. You've come too far to lose your place if someone messes it up.
I just don't agree with anyone being done out of province, unless MSI would cover people from Nova Scotia to be done where we could be operated on in a more timely manner.
The clinic has all of my information and backup contact information.
When I got the specialist, my family doctor and I calling and sending in additional information to update my file -- explaining why I should be moved to the primary list -- is when I got the information from Dianne stating to go on the Stage 3 liquid diet indefinitely, and maybe I wouldn't need surgery afterall.
The only other thing I was offered was to be part of some trial weight loss program that models after a Toronto program. Dianne said to be excited about being asked to participate, because it was a select few people being asked to take the program. It was supposed to start last August, when they called me with a price for it.... almost $4,000.00 -- to which MSI doesn't cover, nor could I afford. It was the last time I heard from the clinic here.
The whole thing sickens me. Don't rock the boat now, because you're less than a year away from being operated on.
Chris, I am truly happy for you to be starting this journey. I truly am. My frustration is with Capital Health Obesity Network, not the patients who have been chosen to have the surgery done. I do my very best, although at times it's difficult, to dust myself off and celebrate their success along their journies. I'll do the same for you.
Honeybee, I'm sorry that you've been waiting so long, but congratuations for taking things into your own hands and having it done on your own. June is just around the corner, so your new, healthier life awaits you : )

On a sidenote, more sickening than my referral being sent in 1998, and Honeybee's being sent in 1996 --- Coreena's initial surgery was done in Halifax by the former surgeon who was the only surgeon in the province to perform these surgeries for years.
Coreena's care will not be followed up by any member of the 'Obesity Network Team' at the QE2. I
I can't imagine having a liver transplant in Alberta, relocating to Halifax, and having no liver specialist here take care of you because they didn't perform the actual surgery. That scenario isn't even close to what happened to her. Imagine a liver transplant doctor, working out of the QE2 relocating to the US where they are better paid, only to have the hospital here unwilling to assist in your aftercare.
I despise the actions of the people managing the 'Obesity Clinic'. They make like it's a private country club, and I don't feel like it's fair or treating all of us equally. I've stayed quiet for over a decade. I've felt beaten down, defeated, abandoned. I can't wait until I'm strong enough to have my ***** spite.. and fight back. It's slowly resurfacing. Every once in awhile it peeks in and rants -- such as today : )

Thanks Carly!
Of course I'm not the only one left out of the "private country club". There are thousands of us that keep on suffering (malnutrition due to excessive vommiting) because they can't find the care or know Dr. MacDonald can help in Amherst. It took me 3 years to finally learn he was still an active surgeon in this province, and that he would actually do something called a "revision". My family doctor had no idea where to turn and I only found out because I started a support group! Otherwise, I'd still be walking around with my fistula, puking 3-4 times/week if I tried to eat more than mush and my stomach attached to my liver!!!!!!! I had suffered from GERD since 1993 with severe spasms, and had Dr. Curry do a scope test which hurt like Hell, when he rammed that scope down through my band or staples!! He said I had GERD but didn't know how to treat it with a "pouch & band". Medication never worked and it's literally destroyed my beautiful teeth due to the acid!!! I had to live like this in silence for 17 years with many nights curled up in a ball because the pain was so bad and just had to wait out the spasms. Thankfully my sleeve removed this problem of a blind stomach and I can't express in words how good I feel to finally be NORMAL!
Right now while I'm in recovery waiting for my stomach to completely heal (seal together), I face a high risk of if I got a leak, I would have to high-tail my ass to Amherst for treatment! Yup! QEII will not treat it, even though they're doing the same surgery I've had.
And anyone, I mean ANYONE WHO'S had surgery out of province is TOLD TO RETURN TO THE CLINIC OF SURGERY. One lady I know had her bypass in INDIA....if she had a rupture or stricture, she has to fly back to India for help. I see this as neglect. It makes no sense and we should not have to move and follow our surgeons!
I'm not just looking at how it directly affects me, I'm more upset with what's happening today with this LIST and how shoddy this clinic is being run!!!! I'm still questioning how they're also part of an outside program which has nothing to do with bariatric surgery or MSI.
Just let me tell you, if I ever develop a stomach problem, I WILL go to my hospital that I pay taxes for, in Halifax, and I will not leave until I am treated! I'm sure it would make the news because I wouldn't back down!
Keep going Chris, don't let anything get in your way now! Honeybee, take care and best of luck with your banding!! We have a couple support group members who've done the same thing!

I spent an hour talking with "someone" at the clinic after I went for my appointment with Dr. Ellsmere. Believe me they are as frustrated as`we are, but the people who pay the bills make the rules. MSI tells them how many surgery's they can do and what is the criteria. I have to say that I am totally insulted that anyone considers this a "private country club". Yes, I've had my surgery, but I waited years just like everyone else.
I spoke with them this morning about volunteering some admin time to enter the referrals in their database, call people, and help them with some other things. I know some of you think this is a waste of time, but it's not to me. By the time I got home there was an e-mail telling me they would love to have my help. It may not be a lot, but at least it's something.
