Wait Times

Hi,

I'm new here, and from Prince Edward Island.  I was told recently by my dr. that my referral for WLS was sent to a Halifax surgeon (not sure of the name) but I'm wondering if anyone knows what the current wait times are?

Is there a primary and secondary list?  And if so, what criteria does one have to meet to be on the primary list?

thanks a bunch!

The current wait times to see the WLS team is about 4 months or so, then they procedure from there and it also based on a individual basis.  Good luck

Hi and welcome
For me it was about 6 months from the time my doc sent in the referal and I got a call to come to a group meeting of 50 people. (they take 50 at a time) Then they sent us a questionare to fill out while you are waiting for your meeting with just the team. After that if they say you are ready than you wait for your call from Dr. Elesmere usually within a month they told me and from there the appointment for your surgery is made within a month.
I really don't know about a list tho. I guess they probally do look at who needs it more.
I think that only Dr. Elesmere is doing the sleeve operation.

Read the other posts and you will get a lot more info.

There are a lot of variables regarding the length of time you wait to see someone for WLS.
Here's one forum where the same question was recently asked.

There is a primary list and a secondary list.  Criteria to be placed on one before the other is other health issues, and the Clinic locally decides which list to place you on, not your referring doctor.

Halifax only does surgery for patients with other co-morbidities (the patients on their primary list), from what I was told by the clinic staff.  However, I have known a couple  of patients over the years to get surgery without co-morbs and were sort of hand-picked off the secondary list.

It'll be 12 yrs this January that I've been on the waiting list, referred to by a very reputable specialist.  I have never met with the team, not even for a group information session.

I just moved from PEI to Ottawa in July.

My referral was sent to Dr. Ellesmere in July 2009, and PEI approved the out of province payment.  I had a BMI of 52.  I had a stroke in August 2009 with high blood pressure, high colesterol. ait  I let them know about the stroke and they were sent updated information from my Dr.

I never received a call or letter to go to an information session.  Ontatrio does have a WLS program but the wait time can be as long as 1 - 2 years and they only do RNY in Ottawa.  I finally decided to borrow money to self pay for a VSG with Dr. Gagner in Montreal on Oct. 4th.

I hope you have better success with the program..
