Bariatric surgery in Nova Scotia
Hi Bev,
I don't believe the lap band procedure is available here in NS. I think the closest is in Ontario, and then you would have to pay for the procedure yourself (about $16,000!). It also requires occassional adjustments to the band to help with continued weight loss and I couldn't find out any concrete info on if there is even anyone in NS qualified to make these adjustments, which means you have to make more trips to Ont. for that. It is a reversible procedure, though. The band can be removed when needed.
There is some great information available on the Capital Health Obesity Network. Here's the link for you to check it out: http://www.cdha.nshealth.ca/default.aspx?page=SubPage&catego ry.Categories.1=112¢erContent.Id.0=32829 It has all the info. you need to learn about the VSG (vertical sleeve gastrostomy) and the differences between it and the gastric bypass. It is still a very similar surgery to the GB, and is not reversible, but does seem to have some pros over the GB. The VSG is covered by insurance and is the only WLS available in NS, as far as I know. There is a referral form on the site that you can print off and give to your doctor.
I have just had my referral sent in, and am crossing my fingers that things get rolling for me soon. I hope this info helps, and good luck with your quest.

Thank you very much for the info! :)
I've been surfing the boards and the site itself for the last couple days and have definitely decided the lap band isn't for me (even if it were available here in NS) but am hearing some good things about the sleeve, even if the drasticness of it all kind of freaks me out. *G* Will have to see if I even qualify at my next appointment with my doctor. Am worried that my GERD is not a result of my hiatal hernia, which I've been told would mean bypass would be the only option available (which isn't available around here). *crosses fingers*

Hi Christa, you can have the lapband done in NB as well., There are 2 drs, one on Moncton, Dr Beausoliel and in Bathurst, Dr Savoie. Dr S's list right now is probably a year or two since he just started. Dr B's is over 5 yrs but that may be different now that a lot of his list went over to Savoie. Hope this helps.
