I have been trying to find information to read about weight loss surgery in Nova Scotia Canada and have been unable to find anything that answers my questions. Does anyone know a good place to get some information.

This is the best place to find the information you are looking for. There is NO surgeon in Nova Scotia who performs this surgery. There is no surgeon in CANADA accepting any more referrals from MSI patients as they are all full and have 5-7 year waiting lists. Unless of course you can pay for it yourself in which case you can have your surgery within 3 months. Dr. Beausoleil in New Brunswick is one who will do it quickly if you pay - about $23K for RNY IN NB or $25K in Ontario private clinics. There are all kinds of surgeons in the US who will do the surgery within three months of your request if you pay or MSI says they will cover out of country surgery. Right now MSI says they will not pay for out of country bariatric surgery which costs $20KUS at Beth Israel Hospital in New York. That's $21K CDN these days. NS MSI has the contract from Beth Israel (same contract they have with OHIP) that states they will charge $20KUS which will cover everything related to he surgery except complications. For the life of me I don't know what the problem would be....its cheaper for them for us to go to the US. That is an appealable decision and once I receive my NO letter I intend to do just that. I'll keep you posted on what happens.

Hi Leahanne We just worked with a patient form Nova Scotia and thereris no coverage. They have a secondary insurence who might help. For us 18,500 US covers everything except the Hotel and travel. We will be working with them to make this affordable. good luck Dr. Graber Utica, NY 315-624-4740

good morning I just had the lap band surgery done in Mississauga Ont. I had to pay for everything, it was 16 thousand dollars. I called for a consultation with the surgern and was given the exact date I requested, July 3rd he could have done it sooner but I couldn't. The waiting list when I was done was around 1/2-2 months, could be longer now I don't know. Everything went very well, and I can have my fills in Halifax. I know it's expensive but I'm worth it! I have spent more on home redecorations and this is a me redecoration! I lost about 23 pounds on the liquid diet before surgery and have now lost about 33, so far so good. by the way you can claim everything including airfare, surgery, and hotel on you income tax. any other questions just contact me.

"There is NO surgeon in Nova Scotia who performs this surgery. There is no surgeon in CANADA accepting any more referrals from MSI patients as they are all full and have 5-7 year waiting lists. " This is what I thought as well, but it's no longer the case. Waiting lists are not quite as bad as they used to be. Dr Beausoleil's list is so long because he's the only bariatric surgeon in Atlantic Canada, poor guy. Check some recent responses I posted on these threads on the NS board: http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/NS/postdetail/164.html?vc=0 http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/NS/postdetail/182.html?vc=0 And check the EXCELLENT thread in the second link that will take you to the Ontario boards, where there's a list of surgeons in Ontario. After a failed consult in New York (denied coverage), I've reapplied through MSI for surgery in Ontario, and am just waiting to hear the results. I'll post on this forum when I hear their decision. On another note, I think we have to be pro-active about this, and APPEAL APPEAL APPEAL! Good luck, Deborah.

Hi, I went to India in March 2006 for gastric bypass and had a very good experience. Including travel and stay for two people it cost us CDN 15,000. I can only recommend it. They have no wait time either (read my profile for more info)

Hi Holly I am not sure how much I will get back in taxes as I havent filled out my forms yet, I was told by my tax consultant it depends on your wages and all that. I was also told I would probably be audited so to have a letter from my Dr. saying that the surgery was not avalilable to me in NS and it was a necessary surgery. I have done that now I am just waiting for my T4 slips and we will see. Sheri P

thanks Sheri. I'm surprised that the government will even help that much.
