Topic: RE: LOOKING FOR A SURGEON IN NEW MEXICO
I'm not sure if he does the DS or not but I will sure find out for you (give me until Monday). I was extremely impressed with my surgeon (Dr. Burger) as well as his partner and the entire office staff. Nancy (Dr. Burger's nurse) is a pro at getting insurance approval and was amazing with my approval. I provided 5 years of health/weight history showing that I had been on every kind of diet under the sun with no permanent results which resulted in my insurance company waiving the 6 month "Doctor Monitored" pre-diet.
A time span for me... I went to an informational session in February, 2008. The next day I saw Dr. Burger. I had to have several test (sleep apnea, esophageal motility {not sure on that spelling!}, upper GI, etc) all before surgery. I had surger 05-29-08, however, if my schedule would have permitted I could have had surgery two weeks earlier. His office is great when it comes to working with out-of-towners.

Katherine -- does your surgeon perform the DS? Also - how was your insurance approval process? Thanks.

I don't think there is a surgeon in NM who does WLS. As stated above, some New Mexican's go to El Paso, Houston or Phoenix. I found a wonderful surgeon in Flagstaff if you're interested. He really worked great with my out of town schedule and insurance company. Good luck in your journey!

Hi there -- Welcome! I have not found a WLS surgeon in NM, period. The closest is in El Paso - and they do not do the DS. Therefore, I am looking at a surgeon in Houston right now. Need to get my PCP stuff lined up before tackling the surgeon and insurance.

Hello, I am considering WLS and am looking for a surgeon in Albuquerque. Are there any out there? if so can anyone recommend one? Thanks.
Topic: Friends and Angels....
Most people never have the opportunity to see an angel, or simply do not look well enough to see them walking amoung us. This, however, does not mean they don't exist. Me, I'm one of the lucky few, not only have I seen an angel, I call her my best friend. --Lori Corkum

Topic: RE: Drs Lara and Acosta in El Paso
I had Lap-Band surgery by Dr. Frezza in Lubbock, Tx. He was horrible about after care. He did me a favor and moved to another state so my insurance company assigned me to Dr. Acosta for after care. I have seen him twice and just love him. I can't tell you what his pre-surgery requirements are as far as liquid diets, but he seems to be a very knowledgeable, good doctor! Good luck with your RNY!

MY PCP is Dr. Pickett who is part of the Presbyterian group at Northside. She has been extremely supportive. I have thought about DS, but still have some reservations. Good luck on your journey and thanks for the reply.

Good luck to you as you make your decision. I went to one of their forums in October and I decided to not go with them as they do not perform the DS surgery. In fact, their staff person said that the DS is a dangerous and inferior surgery. I really do not believe that is true, that is the "marketing" standard reply. I have researched everything for several years and I feel strongly that the DS is the best treatment for me. Can I ask who your Primary Care Physician is? I need to find one, as the one I had been using is gone. Starting over with someone new is hard, and I don't need to waste any time. Thanks.

I had lapband surgery with Dr. Lara in El Paso. He talked to my husband and myself very frankly. If you have come to the point of having made this decision, he tells everything the good, the bad, and the ugly. I am glad he was straight with us. I knew what I was getting into.
The staff at Las Palmas is great. At first I felt funny calling and asking for info and did they receive this or that or how is my insurance going but they were troopers and helped every step of the way. (I know I was a pain at times)! I had to stop eating the day before my surgery, yours might be different. They are having a seminar this week-end in Abq, it's free and you can ask anything and meet the staff.
Good luck, Debbie
