misc. post-op stuff
Well, it's been not quite 2 months and I've lost 40 pounds. Had hoped it would be more, but I shouldn't complain. Have been having some post-op problems and hope someone here can answer my questions, as I need your support. What is up with the constipation?? I've never had this trouble, is it the calcium I'm taking? I'm also not getting in enough protein, (70 grams/day), as I'm not hungry to eat or drink. Should I just force some down in the form of protein powder and count it as liquid? I'm still in the soft food stage and find it very limited as far as cooking protein, mostly chicken. Did have some grilled talapia, which was yummy and will try to take in more fish. The list of allowable foods from my nutritionist doesn't say I can ever have nuts, do any of you find you can have them later on? I know I should go to the support group meetings in ABQ, so hopefully, you'll see me there as I have tons of questions. Kelly
I'm two months out, also. I have been eating normal protein for at least a month. My favorite thing to eat is cottage cheese with almonds. I have to be careful with steak because of the gristle. I swallowed too soon once and it caused a problem.
A life saver for me is the New Whey Liquid Protien with 42 grams of protien. I add it to Crystal Light. Protien shakes are good because they count as protien and as liquid, too.
When does your doctor allow his patients to start eating normal protein?
Hey Deb, thank you for replying as I've been looking for some support on this website. I've been eating protein and found that red meat does not agree with me. I'm about sick of chicken, but do eat fish when I can get it fresh. I've been drinking whey protein (a powder) that I found at Whole Foods, where do I find the "New Wey" brand? There are so many brands of protein powders, and I've heard that GNC carries them of course, but their prices are higher. I've always had problems with Crystal Light, getting terrible heartburn, so I don't drink it anymore. I just stick with mixing the powder with water. The list I have from my doc doesn't say I can have nuts at all. I'm really looking for more fiber too, as I've been having a terrible time with constipation. The Dr. said to go on Benefiber, so I've been taking the chewable tabs that are sugar-free. They're like eating a Sweet-Tart candy. Sadly, they don't work as well as I'd hoped. I've never liked cottage cheese, something about the texture, but guess I'd better give it another chance. Who kows, maybe my tastebuds have changed enough to start liking it now.
