IBS and WLS ?
Wow at the moment, the IBS and liquid diet have me getting quite ill, and everything including liquids can set me off now. I am trying to figure out if it's the constipation variety if I have stools every time I eat/drink something, although they are very solid and I do a *lot* of straining for what feels like an incomplete BM every time? It's so painful and the gas comes every time. I bloat up from ingesting just about anything, although the liquids aren't as painful as the solid food. I get miserable bouts of nausea with it, too, a lot of the time.
How do you guys cope with the IBS? I've read what I could find on the web about change of diet, but the things that it says I'm supposed to eat are not things that I tolerate because of the WLS. I don't have a problem with the things that they say to avoid because I don't tolerate those things either.
I'd appreciate your insight into this. I have extreme intolerance to food, even though I am over 8 months post-op, and the docs have followed this rare side effect of the surgery with me throughout this time. I was beginning to see some improvement with that--finally-- and was even able to eat some cooked food, when the IBS problem surfaced and seemed to snowball out of control very rapidly. I've been on a liquid diet for two weeks again pending my appointment with a gastroneurologist who is going to follow me for the IBS. Is that the kind of specialist you worked with before? I never even heard of a gastroneurologist before this. All I know is that this IBS stuff has pushed my previous progress with food tolerance back in the opposite direction now, and I'm wondering how long it will take before I can tolerate even the foods that I was able to tolerate before the IBS issue showed up.
Has the WLS changed the way you treat the IBS?
Thanks very much! Donna Earley

Hi Donna, I only saw my PCP for my IBS,I had/have very loose BMs and he finally did a colonoscopy on me about ayear and a half ago and he diagnosed me with the IBS,he put me on Lomotil it helps sometimes and I was on a sublingual med. too but it didn't help! I was told to completely change my diet no fried, fatty, spicey, sweet foods and no whole milk basically very bland food, but it still dose not help, everytime I eat it "runs" right through me! I hope the specialist can help you, keep me informed,I am curious as to what he does for you and if it helps!
Your friend,
Sonya

I will let you know what she says, Sonya. I am supposed to see her tomorrow morning and I hope my appt isn't cancelled because of the weather because I'm really getting worn out on the liquid diet and all. It's starting to wear on me, which I'm sure you can relate to from your own experience!
Thanks and hugs,

We had surgery the same day.... only I'm on liquids only for the next 2 weeks still. I crave a scrambled egg soooo bad. I've been really good though. I had gained 14 lbs while I was in the hospital- fluids... I've lost that 14 lbs and 15 more. I'm not really counting that 14 lbs as much of a loss though.
I go back to work on Monday.
Good luck to you going back tomorrow.

Well, my appointment was cancelled; roads were too icy and the office is closed. So now I wait to get it rescheduled . I wish I were a patient person; I'm not. I'll let you know when I actually get to see her and I have some answers!
Thanks, Donna Earley
