My pulminary function test was part of my pre-admission work-up, I believe. Sounds pretty standard, don't sweat it. :)

Try a soft scrambled egg or some tuna if you are going nuts. I found adding a little real food back in worked for me at that stage - just make sure that you make choices that count for your protein!! All important - especially when it comes to the hair-loss thing.

Topic: RE: Excess skin
I have just been referred to see Dr. Joy Cluett, one of what I understand are several plastic surgeons in the province who can take this kind of thing on?

It is still early for me, but I knew the wait to get in would be LONG - I was right - my INITIAL appointment is not until next May, but that should work out, as I don't think they'll look at doing any sort of covered procedure until at least 1-year post VSG - and May will be my one-year mark.

The skin is definitely starting to flap now that I am down 70 lbs - but as Mary said, it is negligable and soooooooo worth the alternative!

Depending on what Dr. Cluett recommends based on what she sees next May, I am considering a tummy tuck - not sure if I'll deal with the bat wings, maybe, maybe not. Apparently this kind of surgery is way more of a deal than the actual VSG in terms of recovery, so it will be a decision on whether it will be worth taking 6 weeks off of work for.

I'll certainly update as I go through the process.

Some are more prone to hair loss than others, so one doesn't know what will take place after surgery until you are there.
Surgery alone makes one lose hair, not to mention stress.Trimming your hair every 3 month helps. A big one is problems with the thyroid. Before the doc put me on synthroid, my hair could come out big time in brushing, I thought it was stress alone, but I imagine twas both. Once on synthroid it stopped. I must say though I still have times when my hair comes out more.
I guess if I am one to lose hair after WLS I guess it will be. I know it will grow back.

Biotin is what helps hair growth and can be found in some food but the concentration is low. I have Biotin in my multivitamin.

Biotin in foods

  • Biotin is found in a variety of foods, but in low concentrations
  • The typical US diets provides about 40 mcg per day
  • Only a few foods contain large amounts of Biotin including royal jelly and brewer’s yeast
  • Biotin content of food varies and can be influenced by factors such as plant variety, season and yield.

Biotin rich foodsThe best natural food sources of Biotin:

  • Swiss chard
  • Tomatoes
  • Romaine lettuce
  • Almonds
  • Onions
  • Eggs
  • Cabbages
  • Cauliflower
  • Cucumber
  • Goat’s milk
  • Raspberries
  • Walnuts
  • Strawberries
  • Halibut
  • Oats

Hi Jane: Hair loss is one of my worries too. I haven't had surgery yet and my hair falls
out now like crazy. I take handfulls of hair out of my brush daily. When I wash my hair
I take at least 3 handfulls of hair out of my brush while I am drying it. I don't understand
why I'm not bald already. I've heard there is a vitamin for hair too isn't there? I don't
know which one. I'm hoping someone reading might know. Maybe we could take in
addition to everything else. I am going to try and google it and see if I can find out.
Congrats on the weight loss. I am hoping to join the losers bench soon.

Topic: RE: Is it Just ME or Does Anyone Else ??
Good evening ladies.

I hear your exasperation in the wait time, and in having to lose weight to have a 60 BMI and under for surgery.
On February 25th of this year I seen Dr Ellsmere here in NS/halifax for my hernia (my gut is fully outside my abdominal wall.) I had been eating 1500 cal diabetic diet and had lost well over 100 pounds when I had seen him.
When Dr E asked me if I was committed, it kinda threw me..here I had lost over 100 pounds already... I thought I was committed. He said for me to lose 30 lbs (I was 430.1lbs that day with over a 61 BMI) and he would put me into the WLP and have WLS and then when I got down to to 250 he would repair my hernia.
Well I went home and read their info/website and realized there was alot more I could do and became committed to ME.
Today I weighed in at 288.6 lbs. I have my one on one not until November 8th. I more than likely will be at 250 by the time I see Dr E again.. :)

Realize the VSG is a tool.. WE do the work and have to work on our behaviours, to keep us losing. YOU have the power to learn  and change your lifestyle in waiting. waiting lists we cannot change but what we can change is US.. our thinking, behaviours and lifestyle.

YOU ALL CAN DO IT!!!  NEVER GIVE UP!! you have to do it after surgery...why not work on things now??

Topic: RE: Excess skin
Hi - I consider my self lucky - the only really excess skin I have is my upper arms - some call them bat wings. In a short sleeve top - not noticeable. In a tank top - I'll take feeling cooler over vanity anyday. My bra size has gone from 42DD to 36C = they are quite deflated - but look ok in a proper fitting supportive bra.My upper legs are not as firm as they once were - but hey - I'll take feeling better over looking good any day. I was 47 when I had my WLS - so mot as young as some of you. Stay active , eat healthy and exercise and be good to yourself! Good Luck!
