I have a hard time with the salt beef.  all the cabbage, turnip, potato carrots are fine. Peas Pudding is perfect because it is full of protein!  now, mind you I only eat a cup full and I had my surgery 8 mos ago.  sometimes I chew the salt beef and then spit it out.  I know it sounds bad but it is worth it.
I have no problem with the fish and scrunchins....just a bit though.
I have an aunt in deer lake who would like to have the surgery, where would she have to go?  are they doing it in newfoundland, or at least paying for it if she could come to Ontario????

Sadly - there is no bariatric surgery being done in Newfoundland. I went to Moncton - Dr.Beausoleil. I had to write a letter to MCP stating my reasons for wanting surgery as well as a copy of my family doctors consult to Dr. Beausoleil. They approved payment for the surgery. Now - the  travel, accomodations, etc - was up to me. And I think thus far I have had 4 trips pre-op - and 4 post-op. But - worth every penny. Whether MCP would pay for her to have bariatric surgery in Ontario - I really don't know. But it's probably worth asking the question. Depending on what your aunt can afford to invest in this - she may choose to self pay - the options are endless. Start with the OH home page - there are tons of ads there. Good luck to her. And congrats on your surgery.

Dr. Pace is trying to start up the Gastric bypass surgery in Newfoundland. I heard that it would start in Jan. 2011 but I have not heard anything since . I have been calling his office , I am waiting to be put on his list. I was pre-apprved by MCP to have the surgery in Ont. but because of their long waiting lists they are not taking patience from out of the province at the moment. The waiting list in N.B. is 5 years. It's so frustrating... I have been trying for almost 2 years now to just get put on a list.

Salt beef, salt fish and scrunchins are doable - but common sense dictates that in very small amounts only - and not on a regular basis. I have found salt beef very difficult to chew well enough that it goes down well. Fish is fish - no problems - and scrunchins - well - you can chew them to mush also. Be good to your body - have a little taste only - and it shouldn't hurt you.

glad to hear.  my parents just came back to ontario from down home and i've got some salt fish in the freezer, holding on to it until im ready to eat a bit of it.  I know not to eat too much, but just a tiny bit...when i get the craving, is phenomenol!!!

salt beef is usually pretty tender when i boil mine, so i dont think i'll have too much of a problem with it, but will try it for the first time without company being over lol
