Congrats on  your decision for RNY Jennifer.  It took me a year of researching too, then I had to do the 6 month diet and then had to appeal with my insurance....but I got it done.
you're lucky you have Oxford, they just approve it, no questions asked.

My journey thus far is definitely a success story.  I am having no problems and I am tolerating all foods thus far.... it was the best decision I have made.  I look forward to seeing you around!!!

Jennifer,
I think my success so far (even though I'm only 16 days post op) is merely because I am tolerating all the foods and drinks.  Many people have trouble getting in even a little bit of food without discomfort or vomiting.... and so far so good for me.  It does mean, on the other hand, that I am not losing weight as fast as some of the others (18 lbs so far) but at least I can sit with my family and eat most of what they are eating (if they choose to cook the right foods) just in much much smaller portions.

You will find a bunch of support on this site and the people are amazing.  You can always PM me too if you want to chat off the boards!!!

hi jennifer

words of wisdom:
keep it simple - don't over analyze the surgery -- it's not that hard :)
protein first, fiber  second, carbs third
drink your water
listen to your surgeon and pcp (they know your medical history)
don't self diagnose or have someone here diagnose for you -- call your surgeon
eat real real real slow
ask a ton of questions and research everything and educate yourself
learn how to read a nutritional label on food
no caffiene - it makes you hungry
vitamins every day are a MUST!!
biotin does not help your hair grow
you hair can fall out from the stress of the surgery and/or lack of protein
not everyone loses their hair
you do not have to eat baby food like the myth says
this is not a race -- you don't have to lose all the weight in 2 days -- there is a window of 18 months to 2 years -- don't worry if so-in-so lost 50 lbs and you only lost 35 -- it's the long run that matters :)
don't  buy a million bottles of protein shakes and powders -- ask people to share samples
don't buy a million popcicles or puddings or jellos -- only buy a weeks worth at a time
remember that your insides have to heal also - dont' rush solid foods
you will be able to swallow pills like you do now -- dont' think everything has to be liquid forever
just cuz it happens to so-in-so does not mean it's going to happen to you
never ever ever compare yourself to anyone else who is losing weight -- we didn't gain it at the same speed and we will not lose it at the same speed -- ppl who are heavier lose their weight faster in the begining

relax -- learn -- ask -- and then educate other people -- you will be fine :)

take care

Thanks for the advise.  It was very helpful.  I have just received the approval for my surgery today.  Thanks god I only had to wait 24 hours after the papers were submitted.  That is great...
I feel a little anxious and a little afraid.  But I am confident that all will be good.
Sincerley,

Hi! I am 7 weeks post-op. I had the Lap Band. I admit, the first 10 days were HORRIBLE! I questioned myself over and over about why I did this. I had terrible nausea and gas. I told my husband and mother that I made a mistake with having surgery, that I never should have done it. Until I got to day 11. After day 11..it was like I never even had surgery. The doctors and nurses will tell you that you will feel discomfort. Everyone is different. I know I had a ruff time.
I too didn't tell everyone. I kept it a secret from most of the people I knew. I didn't tell my mom at first because I was scared of what she might say. I underestimated her. She was one of my biggest supporters. I was scared too. I went back and forth contimplating surgery. But...it is the best decision I ever made. To get on the scale that first time and see how much weight you lost already..it was amazing. I cried.
I have dropped 24 pounds so far. I even bought 2 dresses for 2 event I have to go to. 2 months ago...it would have never happened.
It is a wonderful feling to be in control of your life and not have weight being an issue anymore. I would recommend this surgery to anyone.
This website is awesome. I have met some wonderful people who were there for me at my worst.
The above post was right on the money. And YES, any questions...ask your doctor. My mother in law and sister in law played doctor with me...and it just made everything worse.
Good luck...don't be scared and anything you need....let us know!!!
