Hello, I wanted to introduce myself , Im Amy. I was just approved for surgery on 11/27/07 my RNY surgery is scheduled for 12/20/07. I am very excited and a little scared. I fell like I have alot of information from researching the procedure but not alot of first hand info from people who have had it.  Can anyone tell me if there were things that they didnt know before surgery that they wish they did.  What kind of prep did you have to do prior to surgery? (I know that all dr are different ) Im curious as to what has to be done ahead of time.  Thanks All  Amy  Oh, One more thing, if any one can help me figure out how to set up my Avatar that would be great.. Sorry I am  a little bit computer illiterate...

hi there, im jacki and welcome to the jersey board.  where in jersey are you?? hard to answer your question. my surgeon just had me do liquids two days before, that was it. what to know, just know this is a wonderful thing!! dont buy too much of anything for after surgery, your tastes will change.  i wish someone had told me that.  also dont take much to the hospital, you wont need it. dont be scared, everything should go well.  the surgery is not really a complicated procedure, just do what your doctor tells u to do. anything specific you want to know, just ask. hugs, jacki

Hi Amy and welcome. Congratulations on getting your surgery approved. You are right that every surgeon is a little different in the pre-op requirements, but I believe there are several of Dr Jean Baptiste's patients who are members of the board.  For my surgeon I could not gain any weight )some people have to lose befor surgery can be done) and had to attend a three hour class where we met with the NUT, Nurse Practicioner, and physician, It was amazingly thorough on what to expect and do. Today is my pre-op day and I am on clear liquids only, and had to take fleets phospho soda (a bowel prep) this morning (the bathroom and I are real freindly today :).  Best wishes on your journey and here is a link for a turorial page on the OH site that has helped me a lot http://www.obesityhelp.com/content/tutorials.html Linda

Hi Amy welcome aboard this wonderful ride.I only had to have clear liquids the day before.I chose to do the day before that full liquids.Thankfully mr fleet & I did not meet lol. I wil be 4 weeks postop tomorrow and feel really good since this past Wednesday. Before that I had a burning tearing sensation that noone warned me about. That's the one thing I wish I had known before hand.My doc said it was normal & happens to alot of us.As much as it hurt it is worth it.When I went ffor my 2 week checkup I lost almost 15lbs for a total of almost 40 since Sept.People are starting to notice.More important I am starting to notice and it's wonderful. Hey Amy, Congratulations on getting your surgery date!  I did not have a special diet pre op.  I did have to do a 6 month diet pre op, so I did lose some weight before surgery, but I ate normally right up to the night before surgery.   I wish my expectations of my recovery were more realistiic.  I had read about, and heard about someone that I work with, who was out of work for 3 days and then back to work.  That was not the case for me.  I did not have any complications or anything, but it was pretty rough in the beginning. I was more sore that I expected, and pretty weak.  I ended up extending my time off of work, and went back after 3 weeks.   This was my first major surgery, so I was not sure to expect.  That being said, by 1 month post op I was feeling more like myself.

Other than that, I have not had any surprises.  I will be 4 months out on Thursday and everything is going really well.  I feel fantastic! :)

Best of luck to you!

Jenn

Hello,

I just found the NJ board (I've been on the RNY board for awhile) and I saw your post. I had my lap RNY with Dr. JB on 8/27. You're in very good hands. I had an amazing recovery with zero complications. Everyone at the office is so great.  I can tell you the prep I had to do for JB. Two days clear liquid diet before surgery. Lovely bowel cleansing the day before, plus you have to take megadoses of antibiotics the day before surgery. I can tell you from my experience, the pre-op was worse than the post-op (but it was not too horrific). Anyway, best of luck to you.

Hi AmyLynn, Welcome to the NJ Board,  I had a hard time at first after my surgery. My surgery was open RYN so the incision had opened at the top, so it took 6 weeks to heal I couldn't wear a bra for about 2 months, what a bummer!!! I had to wear a big sweat jacket so know one could tell in 90 degree weather!!!!   Then i had a lot of gas and heartburn for the first 3-4 months so I am on Prilosec OTC everyday.  I never had to take anything before the surgery.  I am not trying to scare you, just wanted to let you know what I went through. I just have to watch whatever I eat now.  Some foods cause gas or heartburn so I have to stay away from those types of foods, other than that I feel fine, and I am losing the weight very quickly!!!   My only problem is when do I stop losing the weight.  I guess my nutritionist will help me with that once I reach my goal.  Well I will be praying for you and continued success on your Journey.  Let us know how you are doing.  I saved a seat for you over on the losers bench!!! Melissa
