Topic: RE: I got my surgery date
Congratulations on your date, it will be here before you know it. I didn't have to do a 2 week liquid diet but I have heard good things about it.
Everyone is nervous before surgery, if they are not they are lying. You will be through the tough part very soon, and on the losers bench with us doing the happy dance (OK so the first few weeks no dancing but you will understand).
Remember to sip sip sip and walk walk walk. That is the key and it is true to this day and I am almost 2 years out.
Bring a pillow for the ride home, and place it between your belly and the seat belt, this helps hold everything still while driving on the wonderfully smooth NH roads.
Take a deep breath and enjoy the ride.

Women can get cysts (fluid filled sacs) OR fibroadenomas (fibrous like tissue, benign masses/lumps); The ultrasound should be able to tell the difference in the lumps you're feeling.
I have not heard that it's particular to WLS patients, however they can be hormone driven which after WLS our hormones can surge and go nutty which may be the case for you.
Also, if you lost a lot of fatty tisssue in your breasts after WLS then it could make the normal breast tissue feel different than it used to. Hope this helps.

Topic: I got my surgery date
Hi everyone. Just wanted to share that I finally got approved, lost my required weight, and I finally have my surgery date of May 14. I am very excited but a little nervous too. I am kind of apprehensive about going on the 2-week liquid diet prior to the surgery which is coming up very soon. I am hoping I survive it. I've heard good and bad things about it. My surgeon is Dr. David Gould and I'll be going to the Elliott Hospital. If anyone has any words of encouragement I think I could use some.

OK, well after WLS have you had fibroid cysts in your breasts?
I never had issues before, but since August of last year I have had issues with lumps in my breast. (DH finds them) I am always aware if they hurt, but now I am scheduled for more testing (another mammogram, sonogram, chest x-ray & ultrasound) I am going to glow in the dark if nothing else. But I am just wondering if anyone else has had this issue. I had PCOS but after the weight loss I haven't had an issue with it. Now I just wonder do they move around?

Martha,
Thank you for your kind words of encouragement. You're right losing a few pounds is only a small part of the bigger picture. I'm beginning to feel very positive to go through this and I appreciate all the support and good words.

Hi Maureen,
I agree with everyone else. Just take one day at a time. I had to loose 12 pounds, and I ended up losing 22. Low carbs, high protein is the key to not feeling so hungry all of the time. The biggest thing is you need to believe that you can do it! That you want to achieve this small (and yes when you look at the big picture it is very small) goal to become a healthier person. We are all here for you, so hang in there and you will do great!!!!

Maureen,
Deep breath first, things happen at a pace and we never know when it will happen. I am not sure how Mass handles the pre-surgery weight loss, but you can do it, we have all been there. It is normal to feel nervous and afraid, but they will help you figure out a plan and how to lose what is needed. STICK TO THE PLAN!!!! lol I am a procrastinator so it took me a while to get that through my head.
We are here to help and support, ask questions, wine, gripe, moan & encourage. Welcome and good luck. HUGS Laurie

Christinalee,
Thank you so much for responding to my post. I'm going to the Lowell General Hospital in MA which is also a Center of Excellence. If they handle the pre-op weight loss similar to Portsmouth that wouldn't be too bad. Thank you for your advice also.

Maureen,
You don't list what bariatric center you are using in NH, but if it's the Center of Excellence at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, then the number they expect you to lose prior to RNY is 10% of your excess body weight. And they will let you know that number at your appointment. Plus when you meet with the registered dietician, they will help you and give you a weight loss diet to use to help you achieve that number.
My starting weight was 311 lbs, according to their information, my ideal body weight was 145 which means I had to lose 17 pounds (my excess body weight was 170 lbs -- the difference between my starting weight and my ideal body weight x 10%). I was able to lose 30 lbs prior to surgery following a low-carb, high protein diet. It took me two months.
Don't get nervous. Just make up your mind that you will do what it takes to get the outcome you want (bariatric surgery). Spin it to the positive and good things will happen for you!
