My first really bad day-- Please give feedback!

Today was supposed to be a bit of a celebration-- my first day on pureed foods from full liquids, and 3 weeks postop! Instead I woke up very bloated and with abdominal pain and cramping, and regurgitating what I ate 12 hours ago. Scared to say the least. Called my nurse (my new nurse! I switched doctors at Barix because my surgeon and I did not click to say the least-- more at another time if anyone wants to hear). She told me keep sipping liquids even if I vomit because it will clean out my pouch. And most likely I am very constipated. I take pain meds for my severe arthritis in my knees and this constipates you like crazy. So I already took a suppository and need to take some Milk of Magnesia as soon as hubby gets some at the store. Have other people gone through days like this? What worked for you? Thanks in advance. Valerie Z.

What kind of pureed foods do they have you on? My surgeon put me in stages, was allowed to add fish, wait two weeks, add chicken, wait two weeks and then add beef. He said your new stomach needs to have food introduced slow because it can't handle for instance having a steak thrown down there right away but fish is a softer protien. It just helps in the healing process. I do know the milk of magnesia helps with the constipation I used it in the beginning, I don't have any problems anymore (knock on wood). Jennie

Jennie-- they have a specific pureed food list I am to follow. I had 1 week clear liqs, 2 weeks full liquids, and now 2 weeks pureed food. I had only tried a small amount of scrambled egg substitute and 1/4 cup mashed potato several hours later. Turned out I was just constipated. I ended up going to the hospital after a couple phone calls to my nurse and vomiting for an hour. Not to gross people out (so if you're squeamish stop reading here, but you may have to deal with this!) but "vomiting" is different now LOL. It's more like a baby, burp and spit up. With such a small stomach you dont have the huge wrenching vomit like before. That's a relief! But I had awful gas/ crampy pains. They hydrated me with an IV, and took xrays. No blockages, just gas and constipated. Milk of Magnesia is now my new best friend! I took that last night and got everything moving and feel sooo much better today. I'm mostly sticking to liquids but am going to start slowly adding some pureed foods over the next few days. Thanks Jennie and hope all are having a good day! Valerie Z.

Valerie, I find gas x works well and so does colace (stool softener). I've heard alot of people use a cup of smooth move tea. I'm 7 months out and can't tololerate eggs yet. Feel better soon K

Hi Valerie. I'm sorry you are having such a bad day! I don't have any suggestions, but just wanted to offer a bit of sympathy and encouragement. I'm sure it will get better! Hugs, Stephanie
