how did you all do it? Ive heard of people following kind of like an Atkins type thing to lose their pre-op weight... which does make sense because of the protein and not being allowed sugars and minimal carbs... just like your diet is supposed to be post-op... any thoughts?

I had 20 lbs to loose before surgery. I pretty much just worked with the nutritionist and followed her suggestions. Keeping a food journal was a big help, it showed me exactly what I was putting in my mouth. Even if I wasn't totally honest with what I wrote down it kept me aware. If you're looking for a commercial diet I might suggest South Beach, it too is a high protien diet but it allows carbs. but mostly just listen to the nutrionist. best wishes. diane

Thats what I have been doing... working with the nutritionist as well, but I was just curious as to what others have done. Its just sometimes I feel like Im not doing it right, because Ive always followed a plan in the past and now everything is at my own discretion. I have my second nutr. appt. today and am dying to know what Ive lost.... but sometimes I feel so lost! Although I must be doing something right because the gym scale says I lost 11 lbs. Any suggestions to jump start weight lost to get those last pounds off?

I was having a lot of trouble with the 15 lbs I had to lose - the nutritionist at DHMC's program had me go on nothing but protien shakes and water/crystal light for a couple of weeks. I could have one very small meal a day if I just had to have it. It did the trick. Now I'm just working really hard to maintain it and still be able to eat a bit more.....I need to maintain it until I have my final pre-op appt in Sept.

Hi Angela, I am having a difficult time losing pre-op weight as well. I have to lose 20 pounds. Even though I am working with a nutritionist, and making progress emotionally (letting go of old habits), I have yet to see the weight come off. Agreeing to be totally honest in my food log was a big step for me. I found out that I was really in denial about what I was putting in my mouth, and how much of it. I have heard of some people who just eat lettuce and tomato for two weeks, but I can't get to that point. I have been in this process for about 2 years now because I kept feeling unsure. Now that I know I want this and have done endless research on it, I am just trying to be patient with myself. I figure I may spend another year or so fat, but if I am moving in a forward direction, I will meet my pre-op goal, and a few years from now........smaller body - yay!!! I think it is a pretty decent trade-off instead of spending a lifetime being morbidly obese. I wish you luck on your next Nutri. appt. I have one next week - cross your fingers please!!
