Pre-op testing done! Curious about recovery
Friday 2-18-11 pre-op testing is done...yahoooo! Gaged on the barium liquids all over myself...but other than that, it was fine! Next step is scheduling appointment with the surgeon.
When I was at the hospital getting the testing I started visualizing what the day of the surgery would be like and how I would feel after.
I am wondering, for those of you that have had the Gastric Bypass procedure and had the bulk of the weight in the tummy area (like I do - apple tummy) - how was the recovery for you?
I know recovery is very individual, but I hear when the weight is in the stomach area, that the pain is really intense at first when you move, cough, stretch, walk etc..... and that recovery takes longer?
How long was the stay in the hospital and about how long was recovery for you?
I am trying to anticipate what to expect so I can be mentally ready. - Thanks! - Xico

Hi Xico and congratulations on your progress. It's nice when you can see it all coming together.
I'm almost 3 weeks post-op so maybe I can tell you some about my experience, although I don't necessarily carry most of my weight in my stomach. I would say that immediately post-op I was pain free.....meds are a good friend. I was up and walking the same evening and aside from some general soreness and tenderness I didn't have any serious pain....again though, meds are a good friend! Where are you having your surgery? I had a robotic laparoscopic RNY at CMC and those are considered to cause slightly less discomfort than a traditional laparoscopy. I was in the hospital for two nights and felt ready to go home on the third day.
Getting home was a different story though.....I wasn't prepared for all the nutrition requirements but once I stopped the pain meds and made myself eat those tiny bits and get my protein shakes down I started to feel human again.....it took the full week for me. I wish I had been better prepared for that first week but I survived....reading posts on the RNY message board helped a lot since I read that so many people go through the same thing.
My advice.....be patient but be prepared....and your health care team is there for you if you need them so if you have concerns talk to them.
Good luck and keep us posted!

Xico,
glad things are working towards your goal. It is so close now you will be there before you know it. As for recovery, you know it will be different depending on pain tolerance and how you deal with it. I would recommend the Rikki (sp) treatments if they are available to you. If you are going through Portsmouth I know they have them. I could not tolerate the pain meds so I went without for 36 hours until I could have the swallow test and then could take crushed pills. The Rikki treatments were a blessing. I actually did better with them then when I had to take the pain meds. I was up and walking that same night, the more you can walk the better you are. Know you will be in pain and it will get better. I do recommend a pillow to help you with the ride home, not only does it help with the seat bealt rubbing, but it will hold you in place for the bumpy ride home. I don't think it matters what shape you are, it is how you deal with pain that makes the difference. Just remember it will pass, you will make it through this and it is so worth it.
