Emotional Eating

I'm wondering if any of you have tried meditation to help break patterns of emotional eating.  I've started some guided meditation (including walking meditation) and I do feel more "centered" afterwards, which seems to help greatly.

I have tried meditation, but the person who was trying to teach me said that my brain just never shuts off, so it is very difficult for me!  He is right though.  I would start out fine, but then something would creep into my brain, and that was all she wrote!!!

But you do whatever is good for you.  There is a terrific book called Mindful Eating.  It is quite a read, and you will learn a lot from it.  I can give you the author's name later, but I just went on Amazon and put the title in, and it came up.  It has helped me, and I think it is time to give it another read!

I have not tried meditation, but maybe I should.  Although I have realized I am not emotional eating as much as bored eating.  Which means I need to get my butt in gear some more.   I think I am in the same boat with Bama about the brain not shutting down.

Eric, it takes time to change your brain, it is hard to realize the patterns of your eating and by doing this pre-surgery you are on your way to success.  That is a great step toward your goal.

Keep it up and keep heading in the right direction!

Thank you both for respodning.

I've started practicing some meditations.  I have a couple of CDs I've burned onto my iPod.  I have listened to two walking meditations, which really help me feel more relaxed during and after the walk (as opposed to listening to just music).

I've also tried a focused, traditional meditation with someone who has some experience practicing.  I really enjoyed it.  I think everyone's mind tends to wander.  I'm being taught that when you catch yourself (even if it's every 5 seconds), just to bring your attention back to your breathing.  Focusing on breathing seems to make a lot of difference for me.

I've started a beginners yoga class.  Tough going at my current weight, condition level and flexibility, but I want to stick it out and hopefully just get better with it over time, as the weight starts to come off.

Hi Eric -

I use Acupuncture, Reiki and Reflexology as tools..I find these helpful and centering. This week I took a class: Weight loss and Hypnosis, which was kind of like guided imagery. It was very relaxing and I also found the breathing to be helpful....for me a good mindful eating tool is to use focused breathing when I eat!

I agree that mixing the holistic wellness work with he medical and exercise has been a good combination for me so far. Plus it helps with everything else in my life that is stressful.

Have not yet done Yoga...I am a little shy because of my current size and have the same flexibility issues...let me know if this works for you.

Take care -
