I have an appt. tomorrow...

GBS'ers, can we take Advil?  Everywhere I read they say no.  I have taken it twice in the last 4 days and it seems that my back pain decreases when I take it.  So, the pain comes and goes and sometimes it runs into my lower abdomen.  WTH could this be?

Hi Lisa,
Sorry to hear about your back pain.  Being as far out as we are, Advil is okay to take -- just don't start making a habit of it, but if it will get you through the back troubles, it's okay.  That's what they told me at Tufts over a year ago.  As far as the pain, could it be gas?  I had pain that sounds like what you're going through twice.  It was so bad at times that I was doubled over.  I came very close to going to the hospital to get checked out.  Then my daughter, who is a nurse, suggested that I drink some bay leaf tea.  She said that's what they give people who are having gas pains.  And you make it just like it sounds:  a bay leaf or two steeped in ho****er.  Believe it or not, it worked both times for me.  You may want to try that.  I didn't believe at the time that the pain I was feeling was attributed to gas, but the tea really worked.  Good luck!

Hi Kathy,

It doesn't feel like gas pains.  It has been fine for the last few hours too.  See, that's why I hate making appts.  Because when I go, the pain is gone, but an hour later it might come back.

The best relief is when I sit in a chair or my car and push my back to the seat and contract my abs.

Thanks for the advice.  I might have to give the bay tea a try later.

I was told never to take NSAIDS again :(

I even asked about an NSAID patch for back pain and despite only 1% systemic absoption, I was still told no.  GRRR.

I hope you feel better.

Thanks.  One thing I learned today.  I'm taking a fish oil supplement and I guess that can be a blood thinner?  I never knew that.  Should I stop taking it?

I was also told absolutely no NSAIDS ever again from Dr. Goulds office.  I have been on vicodin for back pain pretty much since I had my suregery almost a year ago.  I lose all this weight and have constant back pain, doesn't make sense to me.  Hopefully yours in just temporary.
