Little nervous on some things going on w/ 2 I know who had WLS a year ago!
So my male cousin in law has Bypass a year ago April and he's down 204 lbs he looks terrific weight loss wise but his sagging face makes him look at least 10 yrs older, now he's extremely anemic and has to go through testing to see if he is bleeding somewhere!
I have a girl friend who is almost a year out from bypass and lost a lot of weight, she won't say how much but she's been in and out of the hospital on MORPHINE at that due to pain from some hernia that developed after surgery from a lot of weight loss that happened? Is this common hernia's AFTER WLS???

Hernias are not at all an uncommon thing to develop after WLS, it is not because of the weight loss though. It is because of the incision. Hernias can develop at any time that there is an opening between your internal organs and the diaphragm or other muscle that holds those organs in place. That is also why hernias are more common with open procedures than they are with lap procedures.
I am a bit skeptical too. A friend of mine had the WLS back in October. She has been in and out of the hospital and just got home from emergency surgery from a bowel obstruction. She also has ulcers. On the other side, I already have a hernia and makes me think I'll get another one after having this one repaired. Doesn't paint a pretty picture for those of us who are at the beginning of this journey.
I know it sounds scary to both of you, but remember, those you know who have had problems are only a small portion of the people who have actually had weight loss surgery. I know so many in our group who have had no problems with their surgery and recovery, and are eating well, and right, taking their supplements and losing weight. All too many times we focus on the bad things we hear. There are hundreds of us out there who have had the surgery, feel great, and have no problems. Things will happen, but my philosophy is that you will develop more problems and potential health issues if you do not have the surgery including illnesses and problems relating to diabetes and other morbidity issues. So don't let a few people who seem to be having problems sway you against the surgery. Many people will agree that it is/was the best thing they ever did.
Yes It doesn't make me not want to go through with it, it's just some stuff you here after the fact that I didn't know about could arise! It sure will make me ask questions. It's hard I have 2 yr old twins at home and a busy 9 yr old. I hope when it's my journey I will have smooth sailings! I had 2 C-sections so I'm not afraid of surgery I just want a quick recovery for my kids sake! Now if I could just drop these stupid lousy 10 lbs! GEE WHIZ
OH and on top of it I just got diagnosed having SHINGLES ! GREAT that's all I can say not happy about it, it hurts like hell and the pain meds I'm no having me eating because I feel sick if I don't have food in my belly! I'm super screwed!

Hang in there. I believe stress magnifies the effects of shingles, so just worry about getting through this, then take the next step, and the next. Follow what you heart tells you to do. Just take it one day at a time, and one step at a time. Do not be afraid to ask questions. Many of us here have gone through the same fears, excitement, apprehension and a myriad of other feelings.
Hang in there. There are so many of us going through the same things. I'm an emotional eater and I've been really stressed out lately. So what does that mean? I keep eating. I don't know how I'm ever going to lose the necessary 10 pounds. My heart says I want to do it and stick with it but then something happens and it's like some sort of chemical strikes in my stomach and all I want to do is eat. Are you following any special diet to lose the 10 pounds?
I need to follow my diabetics diet I know I can do it! I've done it before. The key is eating around the dang clock! It's super hard eating ALL THE TIME!! For breakfast eat up to 45 carbs, 2 hrs later 15-30 carbs for a snack then 2/3 hrs later another 45 carbs for lunch, then 2 hrs after that another 15/20 for snack then 3 hrs later dinner at 45 carbs then 2/3 hrs after that 15 carb snack/dessert!
I lost 30 lbs doing this it works but if you don't keep it up you will lose weight! It's very similar to weigh****chers it's just eating. Skipping meals isn't an option! Our bodies burn Carbs first then Proteins (Fats) that's why most people cut carbs out completely (ATKINS DIET) but realistically you can't cut carbs you need some carbs in your body FIBER, Wheat etc. With the limits of Carbs it will be an easier to burn then goes right to burning fats! LOT's of label reading and changing things in the refrigerator in moderation so your system doesn't go into complete shock with flavor or taste changes. Instead of 2 ice cream sandwiches eat 1 it's cutting down first then change over the foods to better tastes! It's a long process for me. But I can't do it all at once it's weaning my family into flavor changes. It's hard! Eating is a lot of work really!
