Surgery or Spring?

So, my hair is falling out. I thought that was a by-pass side effect but can it happen to lap-banders too?

Part of me thinks (or is trying to convince myself, not sure) that its just spring shedding but dear GOD its a lot of hair coming out of my head!

I was going to ask at Monday's meeting but got a bit distracted after volunteering to do the lap-band talk.

Thanks for the help!

Are you eating enough protein?  I think that's why some of us experience the hair loss at the beginning of our WLS journeys--because of the limited diet all of a sudden.  Maintaining our hair and nails is not as important to our bodies as other functions.  All the nutrition goes to those more important areas.  It usually starts about 4 months post-op, which sounds about right based on your surgery date.  The good news is that it's just temporary.  Sooner or later, it stops falling out AND the hair that you lost will also grow back.

Thanks!!
I was hoping it would be something I would avoid since I hadnt heard of it till after surgery but I guess Ill just have to pack in more protein and 'enjoy' the ride.
Strange thing is my nails have been AMAZING since surgery, they grow and dont break, everyone is jealous of them. I guess I atleast get that to go with the hair covered clothes

Thanks again

You did such a great job speaking.  From what I understand try and get more protien and it will pass.  It may take time but it will grow back!   ((((hugs))))

I'm a hairdresser and I also see people that have hair falling out that go through CHEMO and it may be a little pricey but if you use NIOXIN hair products it will help w/ re growth. You have to stick w/ it though you can't use another shampoo product or it will interfere w/ the stimulation process. Yeah you may need to increase the protein! But the shampoo product can help it will take over a month to see progress but you will feel stimulation to the scalp and you will start to see new regrowth! Hope my info helped a bit!

Yup... its Esther
Thanks for all the help and the shampoo recomendation. I dont think its quite that bad yet but its good to know the option is there.
Actually got my hair cut yesterday and just cut it all off so at least I have shorter hairs to pick off everything ;)  That and it was nice bc I have lost enough that she didnt have to thin it out.. saved me a few bucks too :)

It is funny, my hair was not affected by my surgery, but my nails were.  As soon as I started getting more protein in, they went back to the hard awesome nails I have always had.
