Hello all I'm greatful to have had a friend tell me about this site! I've been going to the DHMC in Manchester now since October! I've done all my requirements , just waiting for my letter from my dr of medical necessity and I need to drop just 5 out of 10 lbs. You go w/ the mind that I can loose 10 lbs no problem. Holy Hell I'm having a hard time with this! Any suggestions?? This is a killer. I went into this thinking of the Lap Band but w/ my diabetes my Doc said that RNY would be a better choice for me. It sure would be nice talking a lot to others especially anyone that is going through the same steps I'm in at this point! It would be nice to have someone be a constant supporter for me and people to keep plugging at me to keep my goal in my head! Thanks! Anyone else have or had Dr. Gould???
Thanks Colleen

Hi Colleen,

I went through DHMC and went to the Elliot for my GBS AND had Dr. Gould as my surgeon.  Congrats on your upcoming surgery!

The way I lost most of the 10lbs required was to substitue a protein shake for either breakfast or lunch.  You kind of just have to do it (lose those 10lbs) just so you can get a surgery date.  Also, they require you to keep those 10lbs off.  Believe me, when you go on the phase 2 diet (2 weeks prior to surg) you will lose quite a bit more weight (I lost 13lbs in 2 weeks.)

Feel free to post here and ask all your questions.  Usually someone can answer them.

Thanks Lisa! After you lost the 10 lbs did they schedule you right away? Did you hesitate at all (like dragging the appt out over nerves) What's been your hardest part in all this if you can look back at it now?

The 10lbs was the last thing on my list that I had to do.  After I lost (and they confirmed at the monthly meeting) I was able to schedule.  They called me to schedule.  I had NO hesitation.  I knew this was right for me.

The hardest part (in the beginning) was breaking up with food.  It was my best friend for 30 years.  I didn't want to waste it if I couldn't eat it so I would try to fini**** but then paid for it because it was just "that" much more and my pouch couldn't handle it.  After a while that goes away.  I made 2 eggs and 2 slices of toast for breakfast yesterday....I ended up throwing away 1 piece of toast and about 1/4 of the eggs.  So, I guess I still need to work on knowing how much I can actually eat compared to what I want to eat.

Good luck and let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Colleen!  I am a vet at 3 yrs out and back in the "ole days" we had to lose closer to 20lbs.  I will tell you I followed South Beach TO THE T! ...Drank a LOT of water and green tea and tried to walk some if I could.  Back then it was hard.   I did lose the weight plus 14lbs during the pre-op.  It was so nice to have that weight GONE before I started down the road.  My advice is to write it down..which I know is a HUGE pain but really..you have to..or use a program like FITDAY.com to log what you are eating.   Water..walking and SLEEP.  You need these things to get to this mini goal.  I found when I got the hungries...refocus.  Bubble baths...books...favorite movies..FACEBOOK GAMES..anything to distract.  It will be over before you know it.   I have Dr Gould and he has done my band..my gall bladder and my band revision...I am comfortable with him and I am sure you will be.  The program is strict but they just want us to suceed.   Best of luck..let me know if you have any questions.
