Thanks for sharing Dave!   As terrible as I may sound, those are the kind of thinks I want to know!  I don't want to freak over something "normal"!  It really doesn't sound like it has been to, to bad has it? I mean bad enough for sure!! Esp. the throwing up part, God I hate to throw up! Not even a week though and your starting to feel half way decent? that seems pretty good! How are you doing drinking protien drinks at home?  I can't believe your down 20 pounds already!!  Way to go!! Thanks again, I'm SURE I will have more questions and "moments" before the 16th!  Cindy

Wow Dave, what a horrible experience.  You are going to scare her away.  I had no issues at all with my surgery.  Pretty text book!!  I didn't get sick at all and I still haven't.  Im so sorry to hear you went through hell!!  I hope everything is better.

Hello, I wanted to give you my experience too if you didn't mind. I had surgery the day before you Dave and I only saw one female on my floor, I must have missed you.

The morning of my surgery well, scary for me I guess. I was so nervous, shaking like you wouldn't believe. However the MANY searches I did on the Internet about the morning of was true. They have you going to quickly that you don't have much time to think about anything.
The pre op nurse takes you into this little room, and you get into those very attractive hospital gowns. My IV was put in, and then I hit a bump in the road. Dr Gens came in and said we are moving really good this morning we are going to take you in a little early like 15-20 minutes. That's when it started to get more "real" for me. The tears started to come. After that they put something into my IV to calm me down, wheeled me into the OR, I remember moving over to the OR table and they said "okay we are going to put a mask on you now and you will start to fall asleep..... goodnight Sonya"... and that's it, what seemed like 5 minutes turned out to be two hours or so. My family said that the doctors keep the people in the waiting room informed of everything. At one point they came out and said that it should be done in about thirty minutes.. then a few minutes later they came out and said that its taking a little longer then expected because I had scar tissue ( from having my son) but should be done soon.

I woke up in recovery and to be honest was in a lot of pain. I asked for water, because man was my mouth drier then anything. Even though the response was "Sorry you cant have anything to drin****il tomorrow", I must have pissed a few of the nurses off I had to have asked so many times.... DRY DRY DRY mouth ( but ask for the little sponges, you can at least wet the inside of your mouth and lips).... and of course my family came in to see me, and my lower back hurt so much and I couldn't get comfortable. I shortly went up to my room and was in and out of sleep. My boyfriend told me after that it was kinda funny because he would ask me a question and I would start to answer but then doze off in a matter of a few seconds.... Like the OR nurse said when I was in pre-op and just remember this if they done tell you. " This is not a hotel room, they will wake you up every two hours"... and sure enough first night seems like hell, your so tired and you just want to sleep, but between the blood pressure cuff, the leg things, and the nurse getting blood every 4-6 hours to check your blood count. Its impossible to get sleep. I tried to get up that night, however I must have tried to over due it because I too got really light headed and felt soooooo nauseous I had to sit down, and then get back into bed. The next morning was easier... I hate laying on my back, and those hospital beds are not the best, by then I had to get out and stretch. I got up and walked the halls.... went back into my room, and sat for a bit and walked the halls again waiting for the test for the upper GI.... Now might I tell you and they will tell you this the drink you have to take is worse then the drink you had to do before surgery. Its white, chalky and I cant even think of anything that describes it. They make you take a gulp and then multiple sips... I got a little sick to my stomach by the time I got back into my room, but meds helped that out. Did some more walking, sleeping... walking and then the okay came from DR Gens to start state one. I was on state one for a few hours and went to state two... by the next day I was only state three... I was doing really well with the stages, I had surgery on Tuesday and was discharged on Thursday....

Now having your drain pulled out, that was really strange... Not really painful... but more of a pulling sensation... but after that just waited around for the discharge papers and was out....

I also had issues with going to the bathroom... and man Like Dave said does that smell... gross... My son even said something to me. oh well

As the days go on its getting better and better... I'm having trouble getting the required amounts down but Ill be okay...
Let me know if you have any questions too.

By the way all the nurses and LNA's are great!!!!

Thank you so much for your response! I LOVE  hearing from people as to how their surgeries went.  I feel like the more I know what to expect, the better!!  Did you have a catheter? When did they take it out? I've never had one before!  Cindy

Hello, They place the catheter in while in the OR when your asleep. They take it out within a day or two. They want you up and moving asap. Its nothing its awesome when its in.. You dont have to worrry about using the bathroom, and to take it out is nothing it just comes right out.

Thanks Dave.  You are NOT scaring me a bit!  I'm 100% with you, these are the types of things I WANT to know! The more prepared I am, the better I can handle it.  I know there are lots of not fun parts, but not knowing about them ahead of time is not going to make them NOT happen. I will take any and all info from anyone. The swabs sound like a good thing.  I see Dr. Gens tomorrow, will I get weighed again? When you get to the hospital on the day of surgery, do they weigh you after you are in a johnny? Did you have to be on clear liquids for the day day before surgery?  thanks, I will have more questions I am sure!!  LOL    Cindy

I just had surgery on Feb 2,  I was fortunate I had no issues with vomiting.  I would recommend a pic line if possible it made the blood draws very easy and I barely woke up when they came in.  The worst thing was the bp machine, it always slid down my arm so it was never accurate.  I would describe the pain in your stomach and back after surgery as similar to after you've thrown up and you feel the sore muscles in your stomach and back but 5x worse.  The only problem I had was after they did the leak test they had to do an xray 10 mins later and they have you lie down on this hard as a rock wooden table and expect you to put your legs down flat not realizing that their was a reason you had the surgery and generally your ass sticks out farther than your back (not comfortable without the surgery). Then when it was time to get up there was this tiny little girl trying to get me off the table which you have nothing to grab on to so you can't really help yourself at all and she had to get help. So they start to put me in a sitting position and my IV got caught so I was stuck half laying down and half sitting up position that hurt so bad I started to cry an I never cry. Then they stuck me in the hall crying my eyes out for prob 10 more mins until someone came to get me. That was the only bad experience.  The nurses were great. I walked constantly especially after they took out the catheter.  I'd wake up around 3 am and go do laps down the hallway.  I am 7 days out and down 8 lbs  and would do it again.  You will be fine you have picked a great surgeon that is very good at what he does.  Think positive.

Thank you so much for the reply!  These are the things I like to know! Do you mind if I ask how old you are? The only reason I ask is that I am hoping to have a pretty good recovery like you, but I'm 50 years old so wondering if may age will come into play at all. I know there have been people older then me have surgery, but I wonder if I might recover more slowly then someone in their 20's?   8 pounds in 7 days????  Crazy!!! sign me up!!!   Cindy
