Am I on track or not?
I need help.... I think,
I had surgery November 2nd, so I am about 7 weeks out. I think I have been doing good, I am 57 pounds down. But I think that was all due to me not being hungry at all. I had to force myself to eat. I was lucky if I was eating 1/4 cup of food 3 times a day. Well that has changed. The last two days I am HUNGRY!!! Hungry like before surgery, so now I am getting worried. I liked not being hungry and forcing myself to eat. So this is what I have eaten in the last 2 days, is this bad or am I still on track?
Wednesday:
Breakfast - Atkins protein bar, I was still hungry so an hour later I had a low sugar oatmeal.
Lunch - 6 pieces of fat free turkey - a serving according to the package and about an ounce of cheese.
Snack - I don't usually have a snack, but when I got home I started picking while cooking so I had about a half a cup of goldfish.
Dinner - Some frozen chicken with rice - not a low fat food at all :(
Snack - Once again i never have a night snakc, but I did I ate half a can of fruit ****tail, the one with splenda.
To me that doesn't look too bad compared to how I used to eat, I just thought I had an off day. But than today HUNGRY again!!
Breakfast - Large Banana (than I read about how much sugar and carbs are in them and felt guilty)
Snack - 7 Pita chips (a serving)
Lunch - 6 pieces of fat free turkey and an ounce of cheese, than an hour later someone in the office had pizza - my all time favorite food, she offered me some and I ate 1/2 piece. This was my first time eating it since surgery and I was pretty upset that it went down fine!! I wanted it to make me sick so I would never eat it again.
Dinner - we are having meatloaf anf potatoes, I will eat one small slice w/potatoes and ff gravy.
So my question is, is this too much food? Or just bad choices? I read what you all eat everyday and maybe I am OK and am just ready for more food.
By the way I have never been sick, or had dumping syndrome either, is this normal?
I never get enough protein, not even close - I hate protein drinks, I think I have tried them all. And I never drink enough fluid either. Oh and I have not exercised at all since the surgery. I know it is time to change. I got my son a Wii for X-mas and bought myself Wii fit and biggest loser, I will exercise, I hope I will enjoy it after a while.
Thanks for reading my post.

Hi Gayle,
Well, from looking at what you are eating, I can tell right off you are not getting enough protein. You need to eat less carbs. I am not a big shake person, but I have found two that I really like. Light Muscle Milk and FitSmart. I get the chocolate in both, and I add a tablespoon of peanut butter and ice. It is really good. It also gives you a shot of protein first thing. You are hungry because you are not giving your body enough fuel to run on. I also use Simply Smart fat free milk. It does taste like 2% milk.
Some of the things you can try.
Greek Yogurt. You can get the vanilla or plain, sweeten it with what ever no sugar sweetener you use. You can also add fresh fruit, sugar free jams or jellies, peanut butter, granola, etc.
Sugar free fat free puddings.
Kashi crackers and cheese.
tuna and crackers.
You get the picture. Every meal should have some protein in it. Try looking at some of the plans that we are posting, and go from there. I think you will be less hungry, and lose weight.
Oh and it is not unusual to not have dumping syndrome. Some of our RNY people in our group have no dumping whatsoever.
You have to drink your fluids, and you have to exercise. I know it is hard, but you need the fluids to flush out all the bad. Just keep saying "I can do this!"

Hi Gayle,
Congrats on your loss. You are a week ahead of me but I agree with the other posters so far; you don't appear to be getting enough protein.
Every meal should be protein first, then veggie (cooked at this point and only certain ones) or soft fruit then starch last. I'm not sure what "phase" you are on but I am on phase 4, which is "moist, chopped foods". Heh, it sounds like dog food and indeed, that is the consistency I need to shoot for...meaning, turkey chili, fat free refried beans, cheese, eggs, ground turkey or chicken and moist, flakey fish. I can have "crackers" but haven't tried them and have no interest in them. The only "starch" I can think of is cream of wheat (made with milk) every few days for breakfast but I choose that food for the higher protein content (especially when made with milk). Oh..and I did have oatmeal the other day, made with milk (and I mean skim milk when I say milk) and it was actually quite tastey. I usually mix a bit of sf applesauce or even 1/2 of a banana for some flavor.
Anyway, I really think you need to eat more protein. Shoot for at least 60 grams per day and that will keep your hunger at bay.
Eh, I'm starting to tire of the protein shakes too and would prefer the protein bars (Pure Protein has a 20 gram protein, 200 cal bar that is very good!) Unfortunately, at this point, I think is is almost impossible to get the 60 grams of protein in with just food alone so it is something we have to live with: I would, though, try different brands of protein drinks. I know that in the early weeks, Isopure drinks were a godsend to me to get in protein. They are in individual bottles at GNC in different fruit flavors (not milk base). Though they are pricey at about $5 each, they are 43 grams of protein per bottle. At this point, you could use 1/2 bottle every day and get 20 grams or 1/3 of your daily protein target in. I don't like them straight but dilute them with my water bottle so you get a double bonus of protein and fluids. Suzette

Hi Gayle
I too am surprised you're hungry. I'm 9 months out and still not hungry.
I recommend the following: start with a smaller plate. Then divide your food into 3 categories (protein, veggies, carbs). With small bites slowly eat your protein--all of it. Then stop for a minute or two and slowly eat your veggies--all of them. Stop, then slowly eat your carbs. If you get full along the way, stop and throw the rest out. Get up and walk away from the table. Forget about manners, others, etc. Do this for you.
Good luck.
Tom
