Lap Band vs Gastric Bypass
Hi everyone,
I am doing some research. I will be getting insurance for the first time in 5 years next month. I plan on talk to my PCP to get on a plan to talk with a bariatric doctor about WLS. A little history so you don't think I am doing this littlely. I have been over weight for 10 years. I have done everything under the sun to loss it and it just doesn't come off, WW, diet and exercise. I haven't tried the more expensice plans because well they cost to much for me to do, besides I don't have a lot of faith in them. Any ways, it is getting to the point where I am pushing 300 and its is really hard for me, I am only 5 feet 4 inches and have knee problems from when I was a teenager, and last year I broke my leg and it has never been the same. I have a hard time walking up and down stair, I can't tie my shoes with out having issues. I can't bend over without feeling like I can't breath during and after. I just want to see the person I feel like I am inside. That is why I want this.
So basically I am asking you which is better Lap Band or Gastric bypass? Please remember I am a mom of 3 who is working and going to school so I need something that is not going to keep me unable to do this things for a long period of time. Please let me know what your experience has been.
Thankyou

Hi Nancy,
First congratulations on making the best decision you can to get you health back. You will never regret it. I had lap band done on August 15, 2008. There are huge differences between the two surgeries. First losing weight with the lap band is considerably slower than with the RNY. You also have to become pretty disciplined in your eating, as you can eat just about everything. Also, it takes time to get the lap band so it is the most beneficial to you. You can eat sweets and sugar with no reprocussions at all, other than gaining weight. It has taken me all this time to get my band so I actually am able to fully use it as the tool I need. You cannot graze (eating little bits all day long). I liked the band because I wanted to take control of my eating, and learn how and when to eat. I wanted control over what I could eat, and not have my body decide for me. I thought this was necessary because a lot of the things that you cannot eat during the first or second year of your RNY, you can eat later on, with no issues. RNY you have dumping when you have too much sugar. Lap Band you have sliming when you have eaten too much too fast. Sliming will never go away!! Dumping may. RYN patients lose weight much much faster, many acheiving their goal in the first year. Lap Band is much slower. As a matter of fact, I have slowed way down, pretty much stablizing, which I am trying to break, because I still have 40 pounds to lose. But, the biggest thing is I have not gained it all back, plus.
I don't think that either procedure is better than the other. It is what personally you will do better with over the long haul. If you want to or have to lose weight faster, are a big sweet eater or grazer, then the RNY will be better for you in the long run. I am sure that others will give you their thoughts also.
Either way, you are on the best journey of your life!!

Hi Nancy,
First let me say that your decision has to be made by you and you alone. It's a big decision and you should give it much thought.
I had RNY on June 2, 2008. I have lost over 180 lbs. The weight came off very quickly in the beginning and has slowed over time. I do not have typical dumping syndrome. I can eat sweets but in moderation. I also can eat quite a bit. The biggest thing for me during my experience has been the changes that have occurred in my thinking. Today I control food it does not control me.
with either surgery if you can change how you think and feel about food you will be successful.
I chose RNY because I wanted the weight to come off as fast as possible.. I exercise quite a bit and am now pretty fit. My biggest fear going in was that once I was able to eat again I would go and regain as I had in the past. I've worked very hard to change and I have to say that the classes and preparation were very helpful and something I took very seriously. I also know that the support and motivation this site gives is a gift. I try to get to as many meetings as possible.
I agree with Martha that there is no "better" procedure. You have to do what you think will work for you. Both take commitment. A big commitment for the rest of our lives.
The decision to have surgery was the best decision of my life. I would do it again in a heartbeat. It has given me a life to live to the fullest. I am enjoying every minute.
I wish you all the best and remember we are here for each other so any questions please don't hesitate to ask.
Get ready because you are about to embark on the most life changing journey of your life.!!
