Pre Op Diet

Alls I can say is that I am HUNGRY.  I just started my pre op liquid diet.  Is there a limit on how much I can drink?  I had my protein shake for breakfast, some crystal light and for lunch I had some soup broth.  I know Im not suposed to have Slim Fast, but it's not too far off from the fat I can have.  So I think I will add that.  I know I can have sugar free pudding and sugar free yogurt, but is there a limit?  If I wanted to can I have 5 puddings??  Im not saying I would, but is that OK or not??  My surgery is two weeks from today and I am starting to get very nervous.  I wish I  knew someone around me who has gone throught this to talk to and help me throught this.

Hi,

The 2 week pre-op diet is pure HELL!  It is the worst part of this whole thing, IMO.  You just have to do it.  It's only 2 weeks.  Then you have your surg. and you don't want to eat or drink a thing!

You might want to call a nurse at DHMC and ask them your questions about portions.  I believe you can drink as much as you want (I wouldn't do Slim Fast if it's not on the stage 2 diet list.)  How about yogurt, applesauce or tomato soup?

Good luck.  Your surg. will be here before you know it!

Interesting. Two different programs in the same town. I am having my RNY @ CMC in conjunction with the Obesity Treatment Center and here is the Pre-op diet I started today.

It is approximately 1000-1200 calories per day:

3 Slimfast shakes
1 high protein bar (~20 gram, 200 cal)
1 weight loss frozen dinner (~300 calories: Lean Cuisine, Healthy Choice, Weigh****cher)
2 small pieces of fruit
Non starchy veggies as desired (green beans, beets, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, celery, lettuce, mushrooms, peppers, spinach, tomatoes, turnips, zucchini)
6-8 cups of non-caloric fluids (water, crystal light)

Here is a sample "menu"''

Breakfast:
Slimfast shake
1 piece fruit
Snack:
carrots/celery sticks
Lunch:
Slimfast shake
protein bar
Snack:
1 piece fruit
Dinner:
1 welght loss frozen meal
non starcy veggies
Snack:
1 Slimfast shake

So this is my menu...until Nov 8, when I go to the preop liquid diet!

Now I could tolerate that.  This is rediculous, I know it's only two weeks and people keep telling me to suck it up, but Im dying here .  By the time I get home at night I feel like Im going to pass out - Im dizzy and shaking, it sucks!!  Im taking it day by day only 10 days left, and what else really sucks about this is that I have only lost 1 pound doing this diet.  I cannot wait until November 2nd and get this surgery done with.

Hang in there, Gayle, your surgery is in 10 more days!

Regarding your shakes: Are you allowed to supplement with an addition of some protein powder? That might help in keeping the hunger demon away.

I think that is why I like the Portsmouth Hospital plan.  With this group, you need to lose 10% of your excess body weight before you even meet with the surgeon.  Then you have to keep it off, or keep losing until your surgery date.  If you gain weight above what you were required to lose, then your surgery will be canceled until you lose the weight again.  But this way, you can learn to eat as you will after your surgery.  And you are eating real food the whole time.  I will admit that I was hungry some of the time, but for the most part, I really changed what and how I ate.
IF YOU ARE GOING THROUGH HELL.....KEEP GOING!!

The requirement through CMC is generally 5% for lapband and 8% for RNY, plus completion of the Obesity Treatment Center program prior to seeing the surgeon. Then, two weeks before, everyone does the low cal diet, mostly to shrink the liver further (so I'm told).

The clear liquid diet is 24 hours before surgery and nothing after midnight. I heard they are very, very strict about enforcing that requirement and will cancel the surgery if one is non-compliant.

Hi Gayle,  I used to live in Allenstown ****il a little over a year ago).  I too went through the 2 week pre-op diet.  I found that by increasing the amount of protein I took in each day I did not feel as hungry.  As another poster indicated, once you have the surgery those first few weeks you won't feel like eating at all and have to remind yourself to eat.  Try eating yogurts, cottage cheese, puddings, creamed soups or tomato soup, things which will "stick to your ribs" sort-to-speak.

Best wishes for much success!  It was the best decision I ever made!

ok..it has been awhile for me but I totally remember hating the diet.  The first week was hell..the second week a breeze.  Your body will adjust..the cravings and hunger feeling will go away and (believe it or not) it helps your tremendously for the post op stuff because you are already adjusted.   When I was feeling really hungry I kept busy.   Hot bath..books...housework...go to bed early!   Also chicken broth was something I did whenever I felt like it.  Make sure you are getting your protein shakes..it helps a lot.  I used the Unjury Vanilla with a Splenda..was very good.  It will be over before you know it...hang in there!!!

Hey Wendy-
So it's been a long road since my ba and inner thighs, but I'm finally ready to say that I'm glad I did it.  The inner thighs are ALMOST healed, but not quite.  The pain is all but gone and forgotten.  So have you decided whether you're going to have yours done?
