Beware of Longhorn!

I was at Longhorn for the first time last night and ordered what I thought would be a fairly healthy meal...almost the only option on the menu that looked healthy other than just salad. Grilled chicken breasts with parmesan cheese. But Parmesan crusted chicken turned out to be loaded with not only melted parmesan cheese but provolone and ranch dressing also.
I only ate half and when I got home looked up the calories to see it was nearly 1200 calories!!
Glad I only ate half and had worked out long and hard before I went out.
They did have a couple of fish dishes that were salmon, but I don't care for salmon.
It's hard going out to new places not knowing for sure what is okay and what is not.

I go to Longhorn all the time. They will make you what ever you want. Next time ask for just a plain grilled chicken breast.
I see you are a bander and I guess you can't eat beef, is that right? I had RNY so i can eat beef and will most times get the Flo's filet or the salmon (I'm not a fan either but the marinade they use really helps with the fishy taste of salmon)

But just ask for anything and they are always really nice about it....
Have a good night...Laurie

Like Laurie I've had very good luck with Longhorns.  I had Salmon for the first time ever there not long after my RNY.  It was great.  I've tried Salmon a couple of times since and don't care for it.  Whatever they use for a marinade is amazing. If you can do beef the Flo stk is good.

Also, don't be afraid to ask how something is cooked.  If the waitress doesn't know, ask her to find out.  We eat out ALOT and no matter what restaurant I'm at, if I ask they're always willing to make what I'd like without sauces, butters etc.

Thanks so much for the ideas!! It never occured to me to ask for something that wasn't on the menu. I guess I need to learn to be more assertive in this regard!

Hi Diane,

That will come in time.  I always carry  my card with me just in case.  But for the most part if there is something on the menu that I can eat it is not a problem, but I do ask for it with no salt.  I love salmon so it is not a problem for me!!!

Nearly any restaurant will make the protein portion without the toppings. I had broiled haddock the other day at Weathervane and asked them to omit the ritz cracker crumb topping (its just ritz crushed with lots of butter). It was yummy!  I have been making this type request for a long time (starting with WW many yrs ago) and never have a problem at a real restaurant. They are always nice about it too!  Never hurts to ask!!

The outback has a great menu for people watching their weight or gluten intake. Take a look on-line they have a special menu and it tells you what you can order. I love the fact that they have tilapia there which I love.
