First time and not sure where to go -- Help....
Hi
Everyone, I finally got my surgery date of June 8 and I need to get things in order. This is my first time here so any help would be appreciated. I am a bit nervous over the 2 week prior to op diet and the two week after. The protein shakes, etc...Maybe there is someone who wants to guide me through this as well.

Hi there!
Congrats on your surgery date. Where are you having it done and who is your surgeon? Don't ever hesitate to come here to ask questions. Everyone is at different stages in their journey and are very helpful.
The 2 week pre-op diet is pure hell! BUT, the good news is that it's only 2 weeks. Just do exactly what you're suppose to and you'll be fine. I think I lost 13lbs on the pre-op diet.
After the surg, you will not feel hungry so the diet won't be a problem. The best advice for after the surgery is to REST, WALK and take your pain meds if you need them.
Best of luck!
Lisa

Hi
Lisa is exactly right. Remember, anything worth doing is worth doing right!! You will get through this, trust me.
My doctor requires you to loose a certain amount of weight before you even get a date, or meet with him. Are you having RNY or Lap Band? Either one, the pre op diet will get you ready to "live the program". It will not be hard at all, unless you make it hard on yourself.
Afterwards, yes you will not be hungry at all. In fact, you will probably have to force yourself to drink. The main thing between now and then is to find a protein shake that you can live off of for a month or so. I am still trying to find one!!! I stayed mainly with Carnation Instant Breakfast because it was the only thing I could tolerate. If you don't like something, it will be hard to get through the period that it is all you can have.
Other than the things Lisa told you, the only other piece of advice I can give you is to remember to drink plenty of water both before and after, after being the MOST important. You can very easily become dehydrated. It may feel like you are constantly drinking, but it is necessary.
Good luck with everyting. We are a great bunch of people here, always ready to help out, share ideas, recipes, thoughts, and successes.

Btw. I have been doing my protien drinks for a couple of months now. I do 2 drinks a day and one good meal. i have lost almost 20pds by just cutting 2 meals out and replacing them with protien drinks. I take in almost 60 grams of protien a day by doing this routine. I also have been cutting out on my diet soda and drinking crystal lite. This all seems to be working good for me. So by the time I have to get to the all liquids dieting I will be almost at that point anyways. You still have plenty of time to get yourself prepped for your two week liquid dieting. try it.
and yes I have put just a tiny bit of cheating in there. I have had a few sodas, but nothing like I used to. I have been weaning myself away from it. I also have freez pops at night sometimes. but for the most part like 90% of the time I have stuck to my routine of being good.
One thing I have to do is get into a routine of exercise because i know that is the key.

Some people like the protein drinks you can buy locally (wlamart, target, GNC); others buy online. You can get sample packs of different flavors and types from different vendors (unjury = www.unjury.com; chike sold a bunch of online places; various others). Find one you like, but do not buy too much because your tastes might change and you are very likely to get tired of it...
If you are lactose intolerant, make sure your protein is whey protein ISOLATE (not concentrate).
The other thing you can do is doctor up your protein by mixing them with crystal light or sugar free syrups. I mix a little sf choc syrup in the chocolate, otherwise it tastes too thin to me. Extracts work too -- I have butterscotch, orange, strawberry, etc.
You can also keep your eye out for higher protein foods to add to your diet now and post-op when you get to that point. I buy a lot of stuff in the organic section at the supermarket -- also a lot of vegetarian products are high protein, low fat, low sugar (do check the label!!).
Gather lots of info, make sure everything is written down as far as diet instructions and guidelines so when you are overwhelmed with info post-op, you can just look it up.
I also recommend keeping a journal -- not just a food journal, but writing about your experience so you can look back on it and see how far you have come.
Good luck!
